Photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), a dynamic light-scattering technique for particle size measurement, was used to determine the coagulation rates of aqueous dispersions of relatively monodisperse South Carolina Peerless kaolinite, Silver Hill, Montana, illite, Wyoming montmorillonite, and Florida palygorskite. This technique allows quantitative measurement of the rate of coagulation for clay particles where the traditional turbidity method gives only a qualitative measure. The critical coagulation concentrations for KCl at pH = 10.0 were: 0.199 M for kaolinite, 0.202 M for illite, 0.290 M for montmorillonite, and 0.034 M for palygorskite. The effective Hamaker constants, calculated using Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory, were: 3.1 × 10−20 J for kaolinite, 2.5 × 10−20 J for illite, 2.2 × 10−20 J for montmorillonite, and 1.63 × 10−19 J for palygorskite. Stern potentials at the critical coagulation concentration at pH 10.0 were: −42.7 mV for kaolinite, −40.7 mV for illite,‒21.2 mV for montmorillonite, and −66.9 mV for palygorskite.

Background:
Pain following surgery for cardiac disease is ubiquitous, and optimal management is important. Despite this, there is large practice variation. To address this, the Paediatric Acute Care Cardiology Collaborative undertook the effort to create this clinical practice guideline.
Methods:A panel of experts consisting of paediatric cardiologists, advanced practice practitioners, pharmacists, a paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, and a paediatric cardiac anaesthesiologist was convened. The literature was searched for relevant articles and Collaborative sites submitted centre-specific protocols for postoperative pain management. Using the modified Delphi technique, recommendations were generated and put through iterative Delphi rounds to achieve consensus
Results:60 recommendations achieved consensus and are included in this guideline. They address guideline use, pain assessment, general considerations, preoperative considerations, intraoperative considerations, regional anaesthesia, opioids, opioid-sparing, non-opioid medications, non-pharmaceutical pain management, and discharge considerations.
Conclusions:Postoperative pain among children following cardiac surgery is currently an area of significant practice variability despite a large body of literature and the presence of centre-specific protocols. Central to the recommendations included in this guideline is the concept that ideal pain management begins with preoperative counselling and continues through to patient discharge. Overall, the quality of evidence supporting recommendations is low. There is ongoing need for research in this area, particularly in paediatric populations.

Understanding the structure and dynamics of the protein complexes that underlie cellular function is a central scientific challenge. Biochemical techniques used to identify such complexes would be enhanced by the imaging of specific molecular positions in the context of intact cells, with protein-scale resolution (on the order of a few nanometers). Currently, though, nanometer resolution can only be achieved at the cost of less-direct imaging of the unperturbed cell. Cellular ultrastructure is traditionally studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which yields nanometer resolution on embedded and stained sections, or cryo sections. These cellular samples are neither intact nor in their native liquid state. Light microscopy is used to image protein distributions in fluorescently labeled cells in liquid to investigate cellular function, but even recent improvements in resolution by nanoscopy techniques are still insufficient to resolve the individual constituents of protein complexes. Thus, development of techniques capable of high-resolution imaging in native cellular states would contribute significantly to our understanding of cellular function at the molecular level. The development of liquid compartments that include electron-transparent silicon nitride membrane windows has led to the introduction of a novel concept to achieve nanometer resolution on tagged proteins in cells.

Studies in psychophysiology and behavioral medicine have uncovered associations among psychological processes, behavior, and lung function. However, methodological issues specific to the measurement of mechanical lung function have rarely been discussed. This report presents an overview of the physiology, techniques, and experimental methods of mechanical lung function measurements relevant to this research context. Techniques to measure lung volumes, airflow, airway resistance, respiratory resistance, and airflow perception are introduced and discussed. Confounding factors such as ventilation, medication, environmental factors, physical activity, and instructional and experimenter effects are outlined, and issues specific to children and clinical groups are discussed. Recommendations are presented to increase the degree of standardization in the research application and publication of mechanical lung function measurements in psychophysiology.

At the onset of metamorphosis in Drosophila melanogaster, the steroid hormone 20-OH ecdysone induces a small number of early and early-late puffs in the polytene chromosomes of the third-instar larval salivary gland whose activity is required for regulating the activity of a larger set of late puffs. Most of the corresponding early and early-late genes have been found to encode transcription factors that regulate a much larger set of late genes. In contrast, we describe here the identification of an ecdysone-regulated gene in the 62E early-late puff, denoted D-spinophilin, that encodes a protein similar to the mammalian protein spinophilin/neurabin II. The D-spinophilin protein is predicted to contain a highly conserved PP1-binding domain and adjacent PDZ domain, as well as a coiled-coil domain and SAM domain, and belongs to a family of related proteins from diverse organisms. Transcription of D-spinophilin is correlated with 62E puff activity during the early stages of metamorphosis and is ecdysone-dependent, making this the first member of this gene family shown to be regulated by a steroid hormone. Examination of the dynamic patterns of D-spinophilin expression during the early stages of metamorphosis are consistent with a role in central nervous system metamorphosis as well as a more general role in other tissues. As D-spinophilin appears to be the only member of this gene family in Drosophila, its study provides an excellent opportunity to elucidate the role of an important adaptor protein in a genetic model organism.
Effect of Oxygen on the Degradation of Ti-Si-N Diffusion Barriers in Cu Metallization

Amorphous Ti-Si-N thin films are effective barriers to Cu diffusion in integrated circuits that use Cu interconnects. These films are believed to fail as diffusion barriers due to crystallization and subsequent diffusion of Cu along grain boundaries. We prepare thin films of Ti-Si-N by RF magnatron co-sputtering of Ti and Si in Ar/N2. Ti-Si-N films with Si concentrations of 6 to 22% have resistivities <500μΩ-cm. In previous reports we have shown that Si pn-junction diodes metallized with 20nm Ti40Si15N45/Cu do not fail (increased reverse leakage current) until 600%C. When annealed, these films crystallize to yield TiN and Si3N4. In this work we have studied the effect of oxygen on the degradation of the barrier via TEM, diode I-V measurements, and RBS. Oxygen incorporated into the film deposition process improves the barrier effectiveness as measured by diode I-V reverse leakage current. We find no correlation between the amount of O2 in the process gas feed stream and the film composition with O resonance analysis (RBS) or crystallinity (TEM).
Structure, Energy, and Electronic Properties of the Σ = 13 {510} Tilt Grain Boundary Structure In Si

We have examined a variety of structures for the {510} symmetric tilt boundary in Si, using first-principles calculations. These calculations show that the observed structure in Si is the lowest energy structure. This structure is more complicated than what is necessary to preserve four-fold coordination. We compare the results to classical and tight-binding models, in order to test these empirical approaches.

Recent work using ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) and ultra-high vacuum transmission electron microscopy (UHV-TEM) to study structure-property correlations of PtSi/Si(001) contacts is described. The spatial uniformity of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) for diodes grown at room temperature and 350°C was compared with the interface microstructure using TEM. Narrow SBH distributions with standard deviations of 7–12 meV were obtained independent of the deposition system and temperature. Analysis of the distributions compared well with standard current-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurements on the same diode. These low temperature depositions produced fine grained PtSi films (10–20 nm) with an interface roughness dependent on the cleaning process. Probable orientation effects on the SBH distribution were apparently screened out because of the low doping of the substrates that were used. As the deposition temperature is increased the PtSi tends towards polycrystalline epitaxy with island growth beginning at 700°C. Grains are rectangular and develop a large shape anisotropy of great interest for future investigations.
