Introduction
History
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a common neurocutaneous disorder that has an incidence of approximately 1 in 4000 (Mulvihill et al., 1990). Although NF has been postulated to have as many as eight different forms (Riccardi & Eichner, 1986), this classification system has not been widely adopted. Neurofibromatosis is a group of genetic disorders including NF type I (NF-I), NF type II (NF-II), and multiple schwannomatosis, each with distinctly different genetic mutations and pathologic bases. The NF-I gene is nearly ubiquitous in human tissues and so impacts virtually all organ systems. NF-I is particularly interesting to neurocognitive scientists because of its characteristic phenotypical abnormalities in development of form and function in brain. NF-II and multiple schwannomatosis are essentially disorders of cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, and meningeal tissues with no associated cognitive abnormalities and so these disorders will be excluded from this discussion.
The original term neurofibromatosis was derived at the turn of the last century but the disorder is also called von Recklinghausen's disease because the condition was described in the late 1800s clinically and scientifically by Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen (Cawthon et al., 1990; Crump, 1981; Viskochil et al., 1990). The molecular genetic basis of distinguishing clinical features of NF-I was localized to chromosome 17 in 1990 by two teams of investigators (Viskochil et al., 1990; Wallace et al., 1990).
A model of high-frequency oscillatory potentials in retinal ganglion cells

High-frequency oscillatory potentials (HFOPs) have been recorded from ganglion cells in cat, rabbit, frog, and mudpuppy retina and in electroretinograms (ERGs) from humans and other primates. However, the origin of HFOPs is unknown. Based on patterns of tracer coupling, we hypothesized that HFOPs could be generated, in part, by negative feedback from axon-bearing amacrine cells excited via electrical synapses with neighboring ganglion cells. Computer simulations were used to determine whether such axon-mediated feedback was consistent with the experimentally observed properties of HFOPs. (1) Periodic signals are typically absent from ganglion cell PSTHs, in part because the phases of retinal HFOPs vary randomly over time and are only weakly stimulus locked. In the retinal model, this phase variability resulted from the nonlinear properties of axon-mediated feedback in combination with synaptic noise. (2) HFOPs increase as a function of stimulus size up to several times the receptive-field center diameter. In the model, axon-mediated feedback pooled signals over a large retinal area, producing HFOPs that were similarly size dependent. (3) HFOPs are stimulus specific. In the model, gap junctions between neighboring neurons caused contiguous regions to become phase locked, but did not synchronize separate regions. Model-generated HFOPs were consistent with the receptive-field center dynamics and spatial organization of cat alpha cells. HFOPs did not depend qualitatively on the exact value of any model parameter or on the numerical precision of the integration method. We conclude that HFOPs could be mediated, in part, by circuitry consistent with known retinal anatomy.
Neurotic symptoms, stress, or deprivation: which is most closely associated with incidence of suicide? An ecological study of English Health Authorities

Background. Suicide rates, anxiety/depression scores and stress scores are routinely used as mental health indicators in populations, but their inter-relationships have not been explored. Our aim was to explore the association of suicide rates with anxiety/depression and stress scores, while also referring to deprivation scores, which are known to be linked to suicide rates.
Methods. We undertook an ecological analysis of English Health Authorities, regressing suicide rates (1993–1994), on General Health Questionnaire and stress scores (1994), and also on Jarman deprivation scores (1991).
Results. Overall, Jarman deprivation score was a better predictor of suicide rate than the psychological distress measures. There were no statistically significant associations between suicide rates and GHQ scores, although there was a weak association between suicide rate and mean stress level in women.
Conclusions. Suicide rates, though important in themselves, are not reliable indicators of the levels of neurotic symptoms or stress in populations. Suicide rates are more strongly associated with area-based measures of social disadvantage, though a possible stress–suicide relationship in women could be investigated further.
Visual–spatial neglect in a child following sub-cortical tumor resection

Although clinical syndromes of visual–spatial neglect have been well described in adults, clinical features of neglect associated with subcortical dysfunction are infrequently reported in children and have not been described in detail. Unilateral visual–spatial neglect in a 7-year-old male following removal of a right subcortical juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma is reported. Preoperative baseline neurocognitive assessment of the patient established intact attentional and intellectual functioning. Postoperatively visual–spatial neglect was observed that was not accounted for by the patient's visual field deficit. Consistent with classic features of attentional neglect, increases in attentional demands led to greater errors in performance. The risk of unilateral neglect following resection of subcortical tumors that abut the thalamus or disrupt thalamo-cortical projections was confirmed in a retrospective analysis of patients referred for neurocognitive testing at our site. It was concluded that the ventral thalamus may play a role in visual–spatial attention early in development.
