Summary
The clergy have loitered on the periphery of studies of the Scottish Reformation for much of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. At first glance, this assertion appears surprising because nineteenth- and early twentieth-century histories of the Reformation were replete with detail on the careers of early modern churchmen. Indeed, the history of the Reformation was, largely, a history of them. Figures like Patrick Hamilton and John Knox were ‘designed by the hand of Providence for achieving the lofty and adventurous enterprise’ of overthrowing the Catholic Church in Scotland. The narrative presented by nineteenth-century antiquarians was that John Knox and his clerical colleagues were ‘destined to do more for the cause of the reformation than all the nobles of Scotland, with their armed followers’. Knox’s ‘irrepressible energies’ dominated the pages of nineteenth-and early twentieth-century ecclesiastical histories. In these works, the Scottish Reformation was not simply overwhelmingly clerical in character: ministers were models for emulation.
Knox’s reputation as a Protestant hero began with David Buchanan’s The Life and Death of John Knox, which featured in the 1644 edition of Knox’s History of the Reformation and developed through a plethora of subsequent biographies. Similar works on Presbyterian leaders like Andrew Melville, Alexander Henderson, and Samuel Rutherford proliferated. These biographical accounts usually charted the subject’s involvement with Church policy and politics, but offered little insight into their personal lives or ministry within the parish. Many of the second-hand accounts of the clergy, particularly those of reforming and Covenanting ministers, bordered on the hagiographical, cataloguing and uncritically extolling the subject’s accomplishments and virtues, while rarely faulting their professional or private conduct. Thomas McCrie hailed Scotland’s early Protestant leaders as ‘men of piety and prayer’. He singled out Knox as a man of ‘firm and high-toned principle’ who was ‘endowed with talents of no common order’ for realising Protestant reform, to which he ‘consecrated himself, spirit, and soul, and body’. Comparatively few works were published on clergymen from different ecclesiological traditions. Notable episcopalians, such as Patrick Forbes of Corse, received some attention, while the Catholic clergy tended to be treated as a group.
While historians in the early to mid-twentieth century moved away from the denominational perspectives of their predecessors, the clergy continued to act as the fulcrum on which the religious changes of the sixteenth century hinged.

Summary
ORAL HISTORIES PROVIDE a unique opportunity for the preservation of cultural heritage and community engagement by collecting life stories, documenting shared experience and giving voice to community members. Digital technologies have improved the process of recording oral histories and offer innovative methods for their organization, dissemination and archiving (Boyd, 2011). New means of discovery and distribution are available, granting new levels of access not only to born-digital recordings but also to older oral histories recorded on analogue media. Digitization both expands access to valuable first-hand accounts recorded in the past and addresses preservation concerns, since many analogue recordings were originally created on tapes that deteriorate and become fragile with time.
The digitization of oral history collections has been undertaken primarily by university and audiovisual archives with well-established digital infrastructures for hosting and preserving digital assets (Daniels, 2009; Stevens and Latham, 2009; Weig, Terry and Lybarger, 2007). Public libraries and small cultural heritage institutions engage less frequently in building digital collections of oral histories, due to their relative lack of technical expertise and the challenge of acquiring affordable content management systems and digital preservation solutions. Partnering with other institutions and collaborating with researchers and community stakeholders is one way of expanding access to oral history collections (McKether and Jeter, 2011).
This chapter presents a case study of Jeffco Stories, a collection of digitized oral histories created by the Jefferson County Public (JCP) Library in Colorado, in the USA. The project was created in collaboration with local historical societies and with the assistance of faculty and graduate students from the Library and Information Science (LIS) programme at the University of Denver, located in Denver, Colorado. The online collection, Jeffco Stories, currently includes 163 oral histories. It was recently migrated to open source content management software, Omeka, and is available at http://jeffcostories.omeka.net/. This chapter contributes to research on the digitization of oral histories at small and mid-sized cultural heritage institutions and is particularly relevant to librarians and archivists who are exploring access and preservation solutions for digital collections.
Oral history background
Oral history is a systematic way of collecting personal life stories and memories of historical and community events through recorded interviews (Ritchie, 2003). It is a recognized research method in history and the social sciences that acknowledges spoken memories as primary source materials.

Organic farming systems differ fundamentally from conventional ones in their primary focus on management practices that promote and enhance ecological harmony. Organic farmers also tend to have a different socioeconomic profile. In this study, we summarize average socioeconomic characteristics and production practices of a national sample of about 300 certified organic vegetable growers from 14 states and compare them to a large sample of about 6,900 conventional vegetable growers. We also examine the specific materials used by organic growers for pest and nutrient management.
Organic vegetable growers tend to be younger, more educated, less experienced in farming, and less likely to have grown up on a farm than conventional vegetable growers, and tend to operate smaller farms. Over three-quarters of the organic vegetable growers surveyed have small operations (less than 10 acres of vegetables), and they are much younger and work fewer days in off-farm jobs than conventional small growers. In contrast to conventional marketing practices, nearly half the surveyed organic growers, and the majority of small ones, market their vegetables directly to consumers through farmers' markets and other direct marketing channels.
The organic growers rely primarily on traditional organic processes such as green manuring (legumes), animal manuring, composting, and crop rotation to supply crop nutrients, and on cultural and biological tools, including pest-resistant plant varieties, water management techniques, adjustment of planting and harvesting dates, and beneficial organisms, for pest management. Animal meal, fish products, and lime are their most frequently reported supplemental nutrient sources (14, 20 and 28%, respectively, reported using these materials), and Pyrellin EC and petroleum-based soaps were the most frequently reported supplemental pest management materials (used by 6 and 8%, respectively). The pest and nutrient materials used by the organic growers are generally consistent with current guidelines of major certification organizations that provide services to organic growers, and there is high consistency among those guidelines and national recommendations for most of these materials.
