We aimed to provide comprehensive estimates of laboratory-confirmed respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-associated hospitalisations. Between 2012 and 2015, active surveillance of acute respiratory infection (ARI) hospitalisations during winter seasons was used to estimate the seasonal incidence of laboratory-confirmed RSV hospitalisations in children aged <5 years in Auckland, New Zealand (NZ). Incidence rates were estimated by fine age group, ethnicity and socio-economic status (SES) strata. Additionally, RSV disease estimates determined through active surveillance were compared to rates estimated from hospital discharge codes. There were 5309 ARI hospitalisations among children during the study period, of which 3923 (73.9%) were tested for RSV and 1597 (40.7%) were RSV-positive. The seasonal incidence of RSV-associated ARI hospitalisations, once corrected for non-testing, was 6.1 (95% confidence intervals 5.8–6.4) per 1000 children <5 years old. The highest incidence was among children aged <3 months. Being of indigenous Māori or Pacific ethnicity or living in a neighbourhood with low SES independently increased the risk of an RSV-associated hospitalisation. RSV hospital discharge codes had a sensitivity of 71% for identifying laboratory-confirmed RSV cases. RSV infection is a leading cause of hospitalisation among children in NZ, with significant disparities by ethnicity and SES. Our findings highlight the need for effective RSV vaccines and therapies.

The positive effects of shared book reading on vocabulary and reading development are well attested (e.g., Bus, van Ijzendoorn, & Pellegrini, 1995). However, the role of shared book reading in grammatical development remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a construction-based analysis of caregivers’ child-directed speech during shared book reading and toy play and compared the grammatical profile of the child-directed speech generated during the two activities. The findings indicate that (a) the child-directed speech generated by shared book reading contains significantly more grammatically rich constructions than child-directed speech generated by toy play, and (b) the grammatical profile of the book itself affects the grammatical profile of the child-directed speech generated by shared book reading.

Social pedagogy is a field of professional practice associated with the care and education of young children, support of young people, and with family support that has an established place in many continental European countries. It has attracted attention in the United Kingdom (UK) for its potential relevance to the policy ambition of improving the generally poor educational and social outcomes for young people in public care. In this article, I discuss some issues arising from the task of establishing the value, or effectiveness, of the social pedagogic approach. Using findings from cross-national studies, I argue that there are various problems with measuring the ‘effectiveness’ of social pedagogy, but that in countries where social pedagogy is well established and supported by a policy and cultural context, its role in supporting children and families is highly valued. I conclude by considering some implications for the introduction of social pedagogy into the UK.

Aim
To explore the perspectives of both professionals and older people on modifiable health behaviours and risks in later life.
BackgroundPromotion of health and prevention of disability in later life are major health policy priorities across Europe. A system for health risk appraisal in later life, health risk appraisal in older people (HRA-O) permits a population-wide assessment to be carried out. The HRA-O technology is a single assessment process-based questionnaire, which generates a computer decision support system, to offer tailored advice about modifying health risks and behaviours.
MethodQualitative study using nominal groups and interviews.
SettingGeneral practices, National Health Service and local government social services, and voluntary organisations in two London boroughs.
RecruitmentNominal groups were recruited from general practice, older people’s forums, voluntary organisations and social services departments, and individual interviews were carried out with health and social care commissioners, clinicians, professionals and public health practitioners, which discussed the HRA-O questionnaire.
ResultsPublic and professional evaluation identified necessary refinements of the HRA-O technology, the need for greater insight into the social psychology of ageing on the part of those engaged in health promotion, and the necessary and appropriate involvement of professionals in reinforcing health promotion advice.
DiscussionThis study discusses the findings from the nominal groups and interviews in the light of the technology’s failure to change self-reported behaviour and places them in the context of current approaches to health promotion for older populations.
