Roughly a decade ago an outstanding thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of 2.4 was reported for nanostructured Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3-based thin film superlattice (SL) structures. The published results strongly fueled and renewed the interest in the development of efficient novel nanostructured thermoelectric materials. This review article shall give an overview over the most recent theoretical and experimental advances on Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 SLs and related superlattice systems. The presented theoretical models are subdivided into electronic and phononic aspects. The experimental results are summarized with regard to the method used. A more detailed elaboration on structural and transport properties is given in the subsequent sections.

We develop the technique of ionization parameter mapping (IPM) to probe the optical depth of Hii regions, applying our method to the Magellanic Clouds. Our results dramatically clarify the radiative transfer in these galaxies. Based on Sii, Oiii, and Hα imaging from the Magellanic Clouds Emission Line Survey, we find that the frequency of optically thin objects correlates strongly with Hα luminosity and correlates inversely with Hi column density. The aggregate escape fraction for the Lyman continuum is sufficient to ionize the diffuse, warm ionized medium, but the galactic escape fraction is dominated by the few largest Hii regions. The quantitative trends are similar in both the LMC and SMC in spite of their different star formation and Hi properties.

In this work, thin films of Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 were synthesized by the nanoalloying approach: Nanoscale layers of the elements Element nanoscale layers of Bi, Sb and Te are stoichiometrically deposited on a cold substrate using a MBE setup and subjected to an annealing process in which a solid state reaction yielding Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 takes place. Besides the two binary compounds, nanoscale multilayer (ML) stacks of 9 nm Bi2Te3/9 nm Sb2Te3 were created. The electrical transport properties of the binary compounds were determined in dependence of composition. Compound formation was directly observed in temperature-dependent in-situ XRD scans and was found to start at ∼100 °C. The stability of the Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 ML nanostructure against temperature-driven interdiffusion during annealing was examined by SIMS and TEM for an annealing temperature of 150 and 250 °C, respectively. A comparative TEM study of the as grown and annealed state is presented.

The electrical and thermal transport properties (electrical resistivity, thermopower, heat capacity and thermal conductivity) of the crystalline phase of the binary Cd6Yb system has been measured over a temperature range from 10 K to 300 K. Evidence for a phase transition in Cd6Yb is observed in the electrical transport properties with distinct changes in the temperature dependence of the resistivity and thermopower around T ≈ 110K. An anomaly in the heat capacity and a thermal conductivity is also observed at this same temperature. Hysteretic behavior is not evident in the temperature dependence of any of the electrical and thermal transport properties. In addition, the elastic properties using resonant ultrasound (RUS) techniques have been investigated over a similar temperature range. A large “resonance dip” is observed in the RUS data at T ≈ 110K, which is indicative of some type of structural change in the crystalline material at this temperature. These data will be presented and discussed in context of the undergoes reversible order-disorder transition in the 1/1 cubic approximant at about 110 K, which makes the system very interesting compared to the quasicrystal phase Cd5.7Yb

Technetium sorption properties of Fe2+-bearing minerals and different metal sulfides were studied by batch and column experiments. Pure stibnite (SbS3), pyrrhotite (FeS), pyrite (FeS2), galena (PbS) and loell ingite (FeAs2) fix Tc to a great extent (> 95 % of TcO4- starting inventory). They appear to be favourable backfill materials for redox-sensitive radionucli-des. Physico-chemical processes of fixation and possible fixation modes are discussed.

The astronomical observatories which actively cooperate in the network of the system of the Bureau International de l’Heure, are, at present, about 70. Most of the astronomical time determinations are carried out by means of Danjon Astrolabes or transit instruments; 10 observatories dispose of a PZT and 5 others are installing or planning to have it. The results of their observations, ɸ(observed latitude) and Δ T (difference between local U.T.0 and U.T.C), are collected at the BIH and – contrary to the procedure used until 1967 – used to simultaneously obtain the instantaneous coordinates of the pole (x, y), referred to conventional international origin (CIO), and longitudes origin on the pole equator. As a consequence of the adoption of the above-mentioned conventional pole, the BIH had to change all conventional longitudes in order to keep the origin formerly defined (1967); they are now reported in BIH Annual Reports. A further change was operated on the constant of aberration which, at the beginning of 1968, from 20˝.47 was changed to 20˝.496. The BIH had therefore to operate a step of
to U.T.1, at the beginning of January 1968, and so did the Greenwich Observatory, with a step of + 0.0069. Global corrections, due to these variations and to others occurred from 1955 to 1968 (in 1958, variation of the polar reference, from Cecchini’s to the mean pole of the date; in 1961, adoption of FK4 and of new longitudes), to the data of the past years (until 1968), are reported on Table 8 of the BIH Annual Report, 1968. The formula supplying the correction U.T.2 —U.T.1 remained unchanged, except for the variable t, which is expressed (since 1967) as a fraction of the Besselian year. Finally, stars coordinates in the catalogs used for time service were revised on the basis of observations made during the latest ten years (Neuchâtel, Greenwich and Mizusawa) and a catalog has been prepared, which includes 807 right ascensions for 1960, drawn from 20 catalogs, with more than 185000 observations of the U.S.S.R. (Pulkova) time service, which is also preparing a new catalog of proper motions. The unification of star positions and proper motions is recommended for the PZT.
