Summary
Introduction
Günter Bechly
Insects are by far the most diverse group of multicellular organisms on our planet. Of about 1,625,000 described species of prokaryotes, protoctists, fungi, plants and animals, more than 1 million is represented by arthropods, of which insects constitute the largest group with about 854,000 described species. The estimations of the number of still undescribed species, especially in the vanishing tropical rainforests, are ranging from 2 million to 80 million species! The most species-rich groups within insects are the holometabolous orders Coleoptera (beetles), Hymenoptera (ants, wasps and bees), Diptera (mosquitoes and flies) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). Among the hemimetabolous orders, which lack a pupal stage in their ontogenetic development, the Hemiptera (aphids, scale insects, cicadas and bugs) are the largest group, while all other insect orders have much fewer species.
Even though relatively small animals, the extremely large number of individuals makes insects a very significant part of the total terrestrial biomass in many biotopes. For example, in tropical rainforests, the ants and termites have a higher total biomass than all the vertebrates combined.
Insects are not only diverse in terms of species number and number of individuals, but also in their astonishing anatomical and ecological variability. Insects populate nearly every available habitat on the planet, except for the open seas and the frozen polar regions.

Objective:
To use DNA fingerprinting to characterize nosocomial spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis following hospitalization of a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and active pulmonary tuberculosis, for whom respiratory isolation was not initiated promptly.
Design:Epidemiological investigation.
Setting:A tertiary-care medical center in Tennessee.
Participants:Patients and healthcare workers potentially exposed to the infectious patient in 1992.
Results:Of 172 healthcare workers exposed, 35 (20%) were judged to have acquired tuberculous infection. Risk of acquisition was greatest for nurses and medical receptionists. Active tuberculosis later developed in one healthcare worker and one hospitalized patient. Nosocomial transmission was supported by epidemiological evidence and DNA fingerprinting. The outbreak strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis differed from other isolates at this hospital, but its DNA hybridization pattern was highly similar to that of the multidrug-resistant outbreak strain W that has been prevalent in New York City, suggesting a common strain ancestry. However, the Tennessee isolates were susceptible to all first-line antituberculous agents.
Conclusions:This report suggests the possibility that a molecular characteristic(s) shared by these successful outbreak strains is associated with increased transmissibility or pathogenicity and emphasizes the need for continued vigilance for tuberculosis in the nosocomial setting.

Ternary and quaternary III-V alloys are important for many optical device applications, and a precise control of the composition is required. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is generally considered a non-equilibrium or kinetically controlled process but most of these models are too computationally intensive for real time control. We report on using a precursor state growth model 1,2 for the growth of GaAsSb to control the growth conditions and hence the film composition. The activation energies and the parameters appearing in the relationship are determined by fitting the calculated compositions to experimental ones as determined by x-ray diffraction. The effect of substrate temperature, growth rate and flux intensities on composition is discussed.
