Summary
Back in the early 1970s, there was no established “field” of careers in organization and management studies. Tim Hall recalls that it was fun when he and a small band of organizational scholars, who viewed themselves as being on the cutting edge of theory, who liked to work on somewhat offbeat topics, and who would rather challenge than defend the academic “establishment,” embarked on their career studies. Anyone interested in examining the long-term issues associated with working in organizations was really on his or her own to find useful theory and research in a number of relevant social science disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, political science, economics, and anthropology. To do good research, you had to scan and learn from a number of disciplines and you had to develop your own theoretical ideas. In organizational terms, the scholarly environment in which we operated was complex, dynamic, and nonroutine.
The down side of all this was that sometimes you wondered who your audience was. Many questions gnawed away at you: Is anyone out there interested in this “career stuff?” What journals would possibly publish papers on careers? Who is in my reference group? Everyone I trade papers with is in a psychology, sociology, or education department. Yet I work in a business school. Am I in the right place? But you had a sense that it was all new. And you knew it was important as you saw more and more evidence of the long-term influence of careers on individuals, the institutions in which they worked, and the societies to which they belonged. There was a sense of being on the “ground floor” of something important.

Summary
Our Preface offers some general comments about the way career theory has evolved. Now it is time to get down to specifics and consider the various theoretical approaches to careers extant in the literature today. In Part I we review the current “state of the art” of career theory, based upon the major lines of inquiry that have thus far emerged. Underlying all Part I chapters is a belief that before we can add to the theoretical landscape about careers, we must first have a good sense for its present contours.
To set the scene for the review that follows, a preliminary chapter by Arthur, Hall, and Lawrence explores how the diversity of theoretical perspectives that share the career concept can be brought together to promote cross-fertilization and new career theory development. First, the authors discuss definitions of career and career theory, the range of social science perspectives relevant to career studies, and the characteristics that guide career theory to highlight how career theory can serve as a nexus for transdisciplinary study. They then move on to consider how new career theory develops, by describing a cycle of new theory generation and mapping out the mix of philosophies of knowledge that career theory reflects. The authors conclude, and extend the thesis of the handbook, by claiming that debate at both these levels of analysis can promote “transformational” career theory that gains new relevance in a changing world.
Each subsequent chapter takes responsibility for an established perspective in career theory and covers both the historical emergence and the current relevance of that particular stream of thought.

Summary
INTRODUCTION: FAMILY IMPACT UPON WORK
For some time now, researchers have been taking a holistic approach to examining the career development of individuals, recognizing the fact that the work and nonwork lives of people are inexorably intertwined (see, e.g., Evans and Bartolome, 1984). The work-family linkages are so strong and pervasive that focusing on career development without simultaneously taking into consideration the family's developmental needs will produce an incomplete understanding of career dynamics. For instance, Bailyn (1978) pointed out the necessity for the accommodation of work to family concerns, and Kanter (1977) proposed a critical review and agenda for research and policy regarding work and family. Schein (1978) discussed the work–family–self interactions in exploring career dynamics, while Rapoport and Rapoport (1980) discussed the dynamics of work, family, and leisure. More recently, researchers have started to investigate the implications of dualcareer families for social policy (Walker, Rozee-Koher, and Wallston, 1987) and explored the dilemmas experienced by couples during career transitions (O'Neil, Fishman, and Kinsella-Shaw, 1987). Further, Hall and Hall (1979), Mathews (1984), Stringer–Moore (1981), Betz and Fitzgerald (1987), Hertz (1986), Grant (1988), and Sekaran (1986), among others, have proposed action steps for organizations to make the work–nonwork transitions smoother for dual–career couples.
In this chapter we employ a developmental perspective and explore the dynamics of the relationships between individual, the family, and the career. Only then can we begin to understand the life stages in which the spouses have a relatively easy time establishing the work–family–self linkages and the specific stages where they experience problems.

Summary
Now the basic groundwork has been done. Whereas Part I captures the field as we know it and Part II offers some new perspectives, Part III presents some samples of what might be made of the interplay among the ideas so far presented.
Three major scholars, each sympathetic to our endeavors to advance career theory, were asked to take the material in the first two parts and let their own thinking take its own creative course. There was a basic agreement that each writer would take primary responsibility for, but not be restricted by, a single level of analysis: the individual (Bailyn), the organization (Nystrom, joined by Me Arthur), and the society (Kanter). In the spirit of the exercise to allow the ideas to develop freely, no further guidelines were given. The result is three quite different chapters. What is common, however, is that each chapter offers a powerful demonstration of what can be made of the “land and materials*” from Parts I and II.
In Chapter 23, Bailyn looks principally at the individual's experience of career processes and develops implications for career practice as well as theory. Bailyn stresses two complications in the study of careers: that the career is an interstitial concept and that career theory needs also to serve as a guide for applying the knowledge it conveys. From these she develops an argument that the immediate context of work, the acknowledgement of discontinuity, and the character of subjective experience are major issues for future career studies.

Summary
The limitation of social organization is found in the inability of individuals to place themselves in the perspectives of others, to take their points of view.
George Herbert Mead, 1927When we pause in our studies to reflect on theory and method, the greatest yield is a restatement of our problems.
C. Wright Mills, 1959The concept of the career has never been more popular. Once viewed mainly as a synonym for initial job choice, it is now widely accepted as a central feature in employment arrangements. Career development and human resource management programs are not only widely accepted but also seen as critical to both individuals and organizations. Such programs cover a wide range of issues, from individual careers and work–family accommodation, to policy and strategic concerns such as the aging of the work force, adaptation to new technology, and organizational productivity (Gutteridge, 1986; Mills, 1985). However, these trends mean that much of the practice of managing careers has come close to catching up with the body of theory that inspired it (Hall and Associates, 1986). Either career theory has served its purpose and should be laid to rest or it needs a good shot in the arm.
We believe this state of affairs exists not because we are done explaining careers, but because work on the topic has moved away from its conceptually rich heritage. As a result, career studies are at risk of addressing increasingly narrow and decreasingly innovative questions. Our view is that a good shot in the arm will help rejuvenate career theory and also help us adapt to the dynamic character of modern industrial society.

In Part II we look at careers through a different lens. Whereas in Part I we considered different streams in the career literature, in Part II we examine career theory through the multiple lenses provided by social science disciplines. As we said in the Preface, the concept of Part II was to ask scholars not necessarily associated with the study of careers to look at the domain of their particular fields and to “think careers” while they did so. We asked them to pull out concepts from their area that they thought could be useful in understanding how people's work behaviors and attitudes change over time as a career unfolds.
While it is clear to us why each of the following chapters is important, we have been unable to come up with any obvious sequence in which to present them. If Part I of this handbook showed us the present landscape of career theory, Part II is the garden store of new materials with which the landscape might be changed. And we hope readers will agree the store is full and the materials tempting. To preview the selections, there are ideas drawn principally from psychology (Bell and Staw, Latack, and Marshall, Chapters 11–13, respectively), organizational behavior (Arthur and Kram, Derr and Laurent, Chapters 14 and 22), social psychology (Weick and Berlinger, Chapter 15), sociology (Rosenbaum, Thomas, Chapters 16 and 17), political science (Pfeffer, Chapter 18), anthropology (Trice and Morand, Chapter 19), economics (Barney and Lawrence, Chapter 20), and rhetoric (Gowler and Legge, Chapter 21).

This cross-disciplinary text is designed to appeal to a diversity of social science scholars. The central focus is on new ways of viewing the career, or how working lives unfold over time. Fresh views from psychology, social psychology, sociology, anthropology, organization theory, economics, and political science are among those represented in the twenty-five chapter anthology. The design of the handbook in three parts - current approaches, new ideas, and future directions - is intended to engage the reader in the debate from which new and better career theories can be developed.
