Background:
Exaggerated illness and appearance concerns and related compulsive behaviors are seen in the psychiatric disorders of hypochondriasis (HYP), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It has been argued that these conditions may cluster in clinical samples and that our current categorical diagnostic policies, which assume independence of these disorders, are arbitrary and fail to capture the dimensional nature of these disorders.
Methods:We present retrospective clinical data on 21 randomly selected patients who presented with symptoms that involved anxiety about illness and appearance and who were evaluated for cognitive-behavioral treatment or pharmacotherapy. We also review the symptoms, associated features, and response to treatment of three patients from the sample who were each diagnosed with all three of these disorders (HYP, BDD, and OCD).
Results:Three patients met criteria for HYP, BDD, and OCD, and the other 18 patients met criteria for at least two of the above conditions. The most frequently reported source of anxiety had to do with one's hair. Nine out of the 12 patients treated with behavioral therapy were considered to be responders, and the one treated solely with medication was “very much improved.” Of the eight treated with a combination of behavioral therapy and medication, five were judged to be responders.
Conclusions:Overlap in phenomenology, associated features, and treatment response suggests that these three disorders may be difficult to distinguish from each other and that a “cluster analysis” model may prove helpful in evaluating clinical samples.

Three patients were seen in an outpatient setting with work difficulties involving disorganization and task completion. They were evaluated and found to have significant symptoms of both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, inattentive subtype and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and were then treated with a creative combined behavioral and medication treatment, which emphasized the use of external aides (eg, paraprofessionals). Significant symptom reduction was observed as a result of this combined intervention.

The c-MYC protooncogene is overexpressed in the most malignant primary brain tumor, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), and has been correlated with the undifferentiated character of several cell types. However, the role of Myc activity in the generation of GBMs is not known. In this report, we show that gene transfer of c-MYC to GFAP-expressing astrocytes in vitro promotes the outgrowth of GFAP-negative, nestin-expressing cells with progenitor-like morphology, growth characteristics and gene-expression pattern. In addition, gene transfer of c-MYC to GFAP-expressing astrocytes in vivo induces GBMs when co-expressed with activated Ras and Akt. Without c-MYC, Ras+Akt induces GBMs from nestin-expressing CNS progenitors but is insufficient in GFAP-expressing differentiated astrocytes. The ability of Myc activity to enhance the oncogenic effects of Ras+Akt appears to be limited to GFAP-expressing astrocytes because nestin-expressing progenitors show no increase in GBM formation with the addition of MYC to Ras+Akt. These studies indicate that one role of MYC activity in the formation of gliomas might be to either promote or reinforce an undifferentiated phenotype required for glioma cells to respond to the oncogenic effects of elevated Ras and Akt activity.

We have conducted a wide-field optical survey of NGC 5128 (Cen A), the nearest large elliptical galaxy (3.5 Mpc). From UBVRI imaging and spectroscopic follow-up, we have identified and obtained kinematics for 125 new globular clusters out to a projected radius of 40 kpc. We also extend our survey of field star kinematics in NGC 5128, and now possess a total of 736 radial velocities for planetary nebulae out to a projected radius of 80 kpc.
• The PNe sample along the photometric major axis shows significant rotational support out to 80 kpc.
• The blue globular clusters seem to possess little or no angular momentum.
• The kinematics of the red globular cluster sample show some evidence for rotation around an axis common to that of the field stars.
