Genetic analysis of 12 mutants of Escherichia coli K12 defective in D-alanine dehydrogenase showed that alnA and dad are alternative names for the same locus. dad was shown to be a single gene which codes for a protein of 55000–60000 mol. wt. Study of thermosensitive mutants of dad indicated that its product is a structural component of D-alanine dehydrogenase. The regulatory gene alnR was shown to be involved in positive control of dad expression. This was concluded from (i) the absence of constitutive strains among Dad+ revertants of alnR– mutations, (ii) the trans dominance of alnR+ to alnR–, and (iii) the failure to isolate fully constitutive strains by any means. To obtain a uniform nomenclature it is proposed to re-name dad as dadB and alnR as dadQ.

Diamond is suitable for use as an ionizing particle detector for high rate, high radiation, and/or chemically harsh environments. A sampling calorimeter, a detector measuring the total energy of an incident particle, consisting of 20 alternating layers of diamond and tungsten has been constructed and tested. The diamond for the detector layers was grown by chemical vapor deposition with an averaged thickness of 500 μm. The active area of each layer was 3×3 cm2 with ohmic contacts on opposite faces forming a metal-insulator-metal structure. The calorimeter was tested with electrons of energies up to 5.0 GeV. The response of the diamond/tungsten calorimeter was found to be linear as a function of incident energy. A direct comparison of diamond/tungsten and silicon/tungsten calorimeters was made.

Two complementary techniques are used to study the electrical transport properties related to the use of diamonds as materials for ionizing radiation detectors. Transient photoconductivity using soft x-rays is used to probe the first few microns of the material, while ionizing particle-excited conductivity is used to probe the entire bulk of the material (1 millimeter). Both techniques measure the mean drift distance of free carriers, or the collection distance d. In addition, transient photoconductivity is able to extract the lifetimes and mobilities of the excited carriers. The collection distance measured by the two methods are in agreement, suggesting the material is homogeneous. At an applied field of 10 kV/cm, d is 25 to 30 microns, and, up to a field of 25 kV/cm, d has not saturated. The lifetime varies between 100 and 600 ps, and the mobility varies between 1000 and 4000 cm2/V-s, the range due to natural variations from sample to sample. The primary defects limiting the lifetime are believed to be nitrogen impurities and dislocations.

Summary
Introduction
The process of pollination and fertilisation in flowering plants involves a series of interactive events between male and female cells. One of the earliest stages in the process of fertilisation is the recognition, and acceptance or rejection, of pollen grains alighting on the stigma of the recipient plant. Self-incompatibility (SI) involves these processes. Prevention of self-fertilisation is accomplished by the inhibition of pollen that has the same incompatibility phenotype as that of the stigma on which it lands. These highly specific recognition events are both developmentally expressed and tissue-specific. Investigation of the molecular basis of the expression and regulation of the S-genes, and the mode of action of their products, therefore, provides a model system for the study of gene expression and cellular recognition in flowering plants.
There is currently considerable interest in the elucidation of the molecular basis of SI and much work has been carried out in an attempt to identify the molecules involved in this interaction, especially those on the female side. S-linked glycoproteins from styles and stigmas, and the genes that encode them, have been identified and cloned. Less progress has been made with the pollen component. We aim to look at what is currently known about SI, with a view to examining what is known about the mechanism of this response.
What is known about the pistil and pollen components?
Identification and characterisation of stigmatic S-linked glycoproteins
There have been a number of studies carried out on proteins which have been isolated from stigmatic/stylar tissues.
