A critical review is given of the theory and experimental observations of antenna impedance behaviour in a plasma, as related to radio astronomy. The emphasis is on electrically small antennas. Three simplified cases of plasma are considered, namely, cold plasma without magnetic field, cold plasma with magnetic field and warm plasma without magnetic field. Newly reduced experimental results are reported for the case of cold plasma without magnetic field, showing detailed agreement with theory in the neighbourhood of a cutoff in the propagation of the extraordinary magnetoionic wave.

The sun has been observed daily at the University of Michigan during the last year with three sweep-frequency receivers covering the 100 to 580 Mc/s band three times a second. The output is displayed as an intensity-modulated line on a precision cathode-ray tube that is photographed on a 35-mm film moving about one centimeter per minute, thereby producing a frequency-time record with solar intensities recorded as variations in photographic density. The combination of the film characteristic and the logarithmic response of the IF amplifier permits the recording of a wide range of intensities in greater detail than before. A number of typical radio events associated with solar flares have been obtained; a typical sequence is a short group of intense type III bursts (fast drifts) followed within minutes by a type II burst (slow drifts) lasting 10 to 30 minutes, and followed by a type I noise storm, with or without a continuum increase, continuing for hours or days. The type I event is usually confined to frequencies below about 200 Mc/s, whereas the type III and type II (bursts) have been recorded up to 580 Mc/s.

The Naval Research Laboratory has supported four eclipse expeditions (in the years 1947, 1950, 1952 and 1954) under the direction of Dr J. P. Hagen. The principal purpose was to find the variation of the solar microwave radiation during a total optical eclipse of the sun. During the last two eclipses the sun was sufficiently inactive to enable us to derive the centre-to-limb brightness distribution at a wave-length of 9·4 cm., on the assumption that the distribution was circularly symmetrical. Since these two eclipses were of the same optical magnitude (within 0·12 %) and were measured with the same equipment located at each eclipse near the centre-line of mid-totality, it is of interest to compare their results. The 1954 eclipse observation was described in the last paper by Mayer, Sloanaker and Hagen. The 1952 observation has already been described [1].

This talk is based largely upon the centimetre-wave observations of hydrogen emission nebulae made with the Naval Research Laboratory 50-ft. paraboloidal reflector at 3·15 cm. [1], at 9·4 cm. [2], and at 21 cm. [3]. After the detection of the first individual bright galactic nebulae at 9·4 cm. a systematic search was made to detect other hydrogen emission nebulae, principally with the aid of the catalogue of emission nebulae obtained by Sharpless [4] from 48-inch Schmidt plates at Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories. An interesting correlation between radio detectability and nebular classification by optical size and brightness was found, in spite of the fact that optical extinction was not taken into account. The Sharpless catalogue lists 140 classified emission nebulae, of which sixty-five of the brightest were scanned with the radio antenna beam. Of these, twelve nebulae were detected and measured. They can be grouped as follows.
