Summary
In 1991, Henry Summerson commented that ‘the role of the north of England and the northern lords in the Barons’ Wars has been left largely unresearched’. Despite several recent studies of key northern families, this situation remains essentially unchanged. Such neglect is particularly curious in light of the crucial role of the Northerners in the civil war of 1215–17, the sociological, political and military roots of which were traced in detail in J.C. Holt's seminal study. Keith Stringer notes that although northern nobles ‘did participate prominently in the Barons’ War of 1264–67’, it was ‘not as members of a recognisable northern party opposed to the crown’ as they had done in 1215–17. This essay seeks to address this issue by discussing the nature of the war, and the struggle for control in the region, for the period of 1264–65. While the north of England in administrative terms began on the River Trent's northern bank, thus in essence covering half of England, the focus here will be on events in the counties of Yorkshire, Durham and the border shires of Northumberland, Westmorland and Cumberland. This discussion will be based around three main points: first, the balance of political and military power in the North at the war's commencement; secondly, the nature of the war in the region and the Montfortian efforts to bring the northern royalists to heel between the battles of Lewes and Evesham. Thirdly, it will argue that Robert de Vieuxpont's death had a profound impact on the fortunes of the rebels in the border counties, and is itself indicative of a fundamental problem facing the Montfortian attempts to control the region.
The paucity of narrative material for the region goes far to explain the comparative lack of attention which has been paid to the North in this period. The only contemporary chronicles with a northern focus are the related but very brief Stanley and Furness accounts, the latter being the more complete of the two. Walter of Guisborough's chronicle, despite the location of its writing at Guisborough Abbey around 1300 and its reliance upon an apparently contemporary account of the war, remains resolutely focused on events in the South, while southern chroniclers generally pay scant attention to events in the North.

The years between 1258 and 67 comprise one of the most influential periods in the Middle Ages in England. This turbulent decade witnessed a bitter power struggle between King Henry III and his baronsover who should control the government of the realm. Before England eventually descended into civil war, a significant proportion of the baronage had attempted to transform its governance by imposingon the crown a programme of legislative and administrative reform far more radical and wide-ranging than Magna Carta in 1215. Constituting a critical stage in the development of parliament, the reformist movement would remain unsurpassed in its radicalism until the upheavals of the seventeenth century. Simon de Montfort, the baronial champion, became the first leader of a political movement to seize power and govern in the king's name.
The essays collected here offer the most recent research into and ideas on this pivotal period. Several contributions focus upon the roles played in the political struggle by particular sections of thirteenth-century society, including the Midland knights and their political allegiances, aristocratic women, and the merchant elite in London. The events themselves constitute the second major theme of this volume, with subjects such as the secret revolution of 1258, Henry III's recovery of power in 1261, and the little studied maritime theatre during the civil wars of 1263-7 being considered.

Summary
The day after King Henry III was captured at the battle of Lewes on 14 May 1264 letters patent were issued in his name by the victorious baronial reformers led by Simon de Montfort, earl of Leicester. The very first of these neither concerned constitutional reform nor made any declarations concerning the battle, but instead was addressed to ‘knights and others’ in Windsor Castle and fourteen other castles instructing them ‘not to go out of the said castle to do any ill in those parts, or permit any to be done, upon peril of all the lands they hold in the realm’. The issue of the control of castles and their garrisons was one of the first priorities of Montfort and his supporters. The list of castles provides a revealing insight into the geographical extent of the strategic knowledge of the rebels on the morrow of Lewes, indicating that this awareness stretched as far north as Nottingham and Lincoln and as far west as Winchester and Salisbury. The letters patent also mark the start of their efforts to secure the military dominance of the new regime. In this they achieved great success, reducing the royalists in England to a small handful of garrisons by the end of March 1265. This paper will examine the reasons behind Montfort's success but will also argue that the resistance of the remaining royalist garrisons played a role in determining the final fate of Montfort and his regime in the summer of the same year.
The ‘Bones of the Kingdom’
The role of castles during the English civil war known as the Barons’ War has been surprisingly little studied. While much attention has been paid to the campaigns culminating in the Battles of Lewes and Evesham, attention to castles has usually been restricted to brief mentions in more general accounts of the conflict, most recently in Adrian Jobson's excellent book on the struggle. While we lack the sheer amount of material available to historians of Edward I's reign, as shown, for example, in Fiona Watson's work on Edwardian castle garrisons in Scotland, the field for the Barons’ War is by no means a desert.
