Third-stage larvae of the following species of Dynastidae associated with coconut palms are described: Xylotrupes gideon (L.) (including four subspecies, X. g. ulysses (Guérin), X. g. szekessyi Endrődi, X. g. beckeri Schaufuss and X. g. asperulus Minck), Scapanes australis (Boisduval) (including three subspecies, S. a. grossepunctatus Sternberg, S. a. salomonensis Sternberg and S. a. australis (Boisduval)), Trichogomphus fairmairei Arrow, Oryctes rhinoceros (L.), O. centaurus Sternberg, Oryctoderus latitarsis Boisduval and Oryctoderus sp. (either O. coronatus Bates or O. godeffroyi (Fairmaire). A key to species, based on larval characters, is included. Some small differences, particularly in setation, were found among the four subspecies of X. gideon examined, and differences in setation of the abdominal segments were found between S. a. grossepunctatus and S. a. salomonesis on the one hand, and S. a. australis on the other.

The third-stage larva of Oryctes monoceros (O1), a pest of coconut palms, collected in the Seychelles Islands is described and illustrated, and a key is provided to distinguish larvae of this species from those of O. boas (F.) and O. gigas Lap., all of which coexist in parts of Africa.

In 1968–70 adults of Oryctes rhinoceros (L.) and Scapanes australis grossepunctatus Sternb. were counted and removed weekly from two one-acre plots in separate plantings of 3–5-year-old coconuts in the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain. For O. rhinoceros the immigration rate (average 3 adults/acre (60 palms) 4 weeks) showed no annual cycle or overall trend with time but was reduced by rain; the beetles occurred singly on the palms, but certain palms were more frequently attacked than would be expected by chance; the sex ratio (♂/♀) averaged 0·91, five out of nine females being mated and one having mature eggs. For S. a. grossepunctatus the immigration rate (average 4 adults / acre 4 weeks) decreased with time but was not affected by rain; females were usually accompanied by males, the female being deeper in the feeding hole, and 92% were mated, 15% with mature eggs; the high ♂/♀ sex ratio (3·69), differing from that in reared material, is attributed to females spending much time searching for ovi-position sites.

The trend in the relative populations of Oryctes rhinoceros (L.) in two areas of the Gazelle Peninsula, New Britain, was studied by trapping adults searching for breeding sites. In a high rainfall area with 10-year-old palms and many possible breeding sites, there was a large initial population of beetles which declined over the next three years with the gradual disappearance of the breeding sites; weekly catches were higher when the undergrowth in the trapping area was slashed, and to some extent also at new moon; catches were depressed by heavy rain. The ♂/♂ sex ratio was 0·31; all females had mated and had mature eggs in the lower ends of the oviducts. These results were compared with those from a low rainfall area with 70-year-old palms and dispersed breeding sites. Catches were generally lower; they showed no long term trend and were not related to slashing or weekly rainfall, but were inversely related to the number of rainy days per week.

In a study of the incidence of damage to coconut palms in Madagascar and the Comores Archipelage caused by species of Oryctes (Scarabaeidae) it was found that attack is heaviest in localities where there are abundant breeding sites for the beetle, and that tall palms are more often attacked than short ones. The most important larval breeding sites are dead standing coconut palms and decaving coconut trunks and stumps. Larvae also breed in decaying satra trunks (Medemia sp.), wood of Albizia in coffee plantations, decaying Raphia trunks, and occasionally in rubbish heaps and manure, but are only rarely encountered in decaying wood in forests. Coconut palms are important feeding sites for O. gigas, O. blucheaui and O. simiar. O. pyrrhus attacks coconut seedlings and young oil palms. Forest palms are occasionally attacked. O. ranavaloattacks bamboo on the east coast. Banana plants are occasionally attacked by O. simiar.
Scoliid parasites of the larvae of Oryctes are widely distributed but not commonly found. Gregarines in larvae are also widespread but of rare occurrence. Oxyurid nematodes were often found in the fermantation chamber at the gut of Oryctes and Cetonid larvae. The fungus Cordyceps sp. was found at only one locality where it was attacking 56 per cent. of the larvae of Oryctes. Examples of infection by the fungus Metarrhizium were rarely encountered. Namatodes often occurred in the aedeagus of adult males of O. gigas and in the bursa copulatrix and colleterial glands of adult females, as well as under the elytra. They were less common in the other species of Oryctes examined. Mermithid nematodes were found in adults of Oryctes on rare occasions. No insect parasites of the adult stage of Oryctes were found. Elaterid larvae, possibly predacious on those of Oryctes were occasionally found but did not appear to be of much importance.
It is concluded that the major factor limiting Oryctes populations in Madagascar and the Comores is the number of suitable breeding sites.

The crucial step in the proof of the Topological Stability Theorem is the construction of a certain contact-invariant Whitney stratification of the sufficient jets in the jet space Jk(n, p). There is therefore a certain intrinsic interest in the construction of natural contact-invariant Whitney stratifications of the jet space. It has long been known that if there are only finitely many contact orbits then these provide a Whitney stratification, but in general there is the double problem of finding a candidate for a Whitney stratification, and then establishing that it has the desired properties. Virtually nothing is known about this problem, so it seems sensible to start by attempting to understand the first non-trivial examples which arise. Since functions are rather better understood than mappings it seems natural to try the case p = 1 first. The complexity of the problem now increases with k. When k = 1, 2 there are only finitely many contact orbits, so we start with k = 3. Having fixed p = 1, k = 3 we turn our attention to n. When n = 1, 2 we still obtain only finitely many contact orbits, as easy computations verify, so we start with n = 3. Thus our first example is J3(3, 1). It is a relatively easy matter to list the contact orbits in this case, and in so doing one is presented with an obvious candidate for a Whitney stratification. Our objective is to show that this candidate is indeed a Whitney stratification.
