Production of embryos that are free of tough outer coats facilitates studies that are not possible with embryos surrounded by impenetrable envelopes. This report describes a new procedure for preventing formation of fertilisation membranes in the sea urchin (Lytechinus pictus) model. This procedure involves treating unfertilised eggs with the enzyme alpha-amylase, which cleaves alpha-1,4 glucosidic bonds in the vitelline layer. A major advantage of this method is that it is very well defined and completely controllable with alpha-amylase inhibitor. The results suggest that intact alpha-1,4 glucosidic bonds are essential for vitelline layer integrity required for formation of the fertilisation membrane. Eggs treated with alpha-amylase possessed the same surface lectin receptors as untreated eggs and, as shown by light and transmission electron microscopy, produced healthy, cleaving embryos that were free of fertilisation envelopes.

Our main approach to the synthesis and study of hybrid organic/inorganic materials involves incorporating nano-size inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) clusters into various polymeric resins. A typical POSS cluster is a discrete silicon and oxygen framework solubilized with organic groups and contains a single reactive site. This lone site of reactivity is used to covalently attach the inorganic macromers pendent to a polymer backbone without causing any crosslinking. This strategy permits the synthesis of melt processable, linear hybrid polymers containing pendent inorganic clusters, and allows us to study the effect these clusters have on chain motion, polymer properties and morphology. The synthesis of norbornenyl-based (POSS) macromers, their ring opening metathesis copolymerizations with varying amounts of norbornene, and analysis of the effect of the pendent POSS group is presented. Ring opening metathesis polymerization permits the easy synthesis of both random and diblock copolymers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly images POSS-rich domains against the POSS-free regions. Major differences in polymer morphology are observed as the amount of inorganic POSS is varied, between random and diblock copolymers, as well as between polymers that differ only in the solubilizing cycloalkyl groups on the POSS cluster.

Compositional ordering is observed in essentially all IIIN semiconductor alloys. The mechanism leading to the specific ordered structures formed is only now beginning to be understood. It is intimately related to the atomic-scale physical processes occurring on the surface during epitaxial growth, specifically surface reconstruction and the attachment of atoms at steps. This paper will emphasize the use of surface analytic techniques to better understand the ordering processes during organometallic vapor phase epitaxial growth of GalnP. Surface photo absorption has been used to determine, for the first time, that the surface reconstruction is (2×4)-like during growth of GalnP with Cu-Pt ordering. By increasing the growth temperature and/or decreasing the V/Ill ratio the concentration of phosphorus dimers characteristic of the (2×4) structure is observed to decrease in tandem with a decrease in the degree of order measured in the epitaxial layers. This suggests that formation of the (2×4) reconstruction is necessary for formation of the Cu-Pt ordered structure.
Atomic force microscopy was used to examine the step structure. For exactly (001)-oriented substrates, growth at low V/Ill ratios produces islands surrounded by single monolayer steps. Increasing the V/Ill ratio leads to the formation of bilayer steps approximately 6 Å high. A similar change in the structure of steps is observed in the vicinal regions for substrates misoriented to produce [110] steps. This phenomenon is interpreted in terms of the stabilization, at high V/Ill ratios, of the (2×2) reconstruction on the (111)B regions of the bilayer steps. This may also have an effect on formation of the Cu-Pt ordered structure.
By changing the substrate temperature or the input partial pressure of the phosphorus precursor, the degree of order and, hence, the bandgap energy of GalnP, can be modulated during growth. This has allowed the production of a variety of single and double heterostructures. The heterostructures produced by changing the temperature from 740 to 620°C and from 620 to 520°C are abrupt. The heterostructures formed by changing the phosphine flow rate are not. The ordered structure in the lower layer persists into the upper layer. This may be an indication of the importance of the step structure.

Epitaxial magnetite (Fe3O4) thin films have been grown on MgO(001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The films have characteristics of the “Verwey transition”: the electric conductivity decreases by about one order of magnitude and the magnetization curve shows anomaly at the transition temperature, i.e. about 125 K. Effects of annealing the Fe3O4 thin films at various oxygen partial pressures have also been investigated. Phase identification was made using XRD techniques and infrared reflectivity measurements. The surface morphologies were studied by SEM and AFM. Under an oxidizing atmosphere, the Fe3O4 phase is transformed mainly into α-Fe2O3, and this transformation is accompanied by development of needle-like structures along <110> directions of MgO substrate. It is also found that electrical and magnetic properties of the iron oxide films are changed significantly by the annealing process.

We have grown single and multi-layer epitaxial GexSi1−x/Si structures by RTPCVD on (100)Si substrates using GeH4 and SiH2Cl2 at 900°C and 1000°C with SiH2Cl2:GeHH4 ratios of 14:1 to 95:1 at 5 Torr. Plane view TEM micrographs indicate misfit dislocation free layers were grown for Ge concentrations of up to 13%. Misfit dislocation networks aligned along <110> were formed at the interface of films with higher Ge concentrations. Plane view TEM micrographs also showed dislocation loops at the interface. When the SiH2C12:GeH4 ratio used was less than 25:1, the GexSil−x layer grew by three-dimensional nucleation, resulting in a high density of defects.

Rapid thermal processing chemical vapor deposition was used to grow single and multilaye repitaxial GexSil-x/Si structures on (100)Si substrates using GeH4 and SiH2Cl2 at 900°C and 1000°C with SiH2Cl2:GeH4 ratios of 14:1 to 95:1 at 5 Torr. Misfit dislocation free layers with few threading dislocations were grown for Ge concentrations of up to 13%. Misfit dislocation networks aligned along <110> were formed at the interface of films with higher Ge concentrations. Dislocation loops were also found at the interface. GexSil-x layers grown at 1000°C were highly crystalline, but relaxed. In multi-layer structures, AES depth profiles showed Ge pile-up at the GexSi1-x/Si interface of layers with higher Ge concentrations.
