We describe a novel neuroendocrine test which reflects a central response to activation of oestrogen receptors. This is achieved by measurement of plasma levels of oestrogen-stimulated neurophysin (ESN) following an oestrogen challenge. In normal women the ESN response to ethinyl oestradiol is dose-dependent. This response is attenuated in normal women during the first postpartum month, although it is unchanged in patients with anorexia nervosa, in spite of their similar concurrent hypo-estrogenic state. The altered puerperal response may result from the acute oestrogen withdrawal which occurs at delivery. The time course of the altered ESN response coincides with the period of maximum risk for puerperal psychosis. The ESN response to oestrogen provides a novel neuroendocrine measure to test the relevance of changes in central oestrogen receptor responsiveness in the pathogenesis of puerperal psychosis.

EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is an astro-particle physics facility aiming to directly detect galactic dark matter. The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane has been selected as host laboratory. The EURECA collaboration unites CRESST, EDELWEISS and the Spanish-French experiment ROSEBUD, thus concentrating and focussing effort on cryogenic detector research in Europe into a single facility. EURECA will use a target mass of up to one ton, enough to explore WIMP – nucleon scalar scattering cross sections in the region of 10-9 – 10-10 picobarn. A major advantage of EURECA is the planned use of more than just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification).

The size and chemical composition of optically active CdZnSe/ZnSe and CdZnSe/Zn0.97Be0.03Se quantum dots (QDs) are determined using photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation and polarized Raman scattering spectroscopies. We show that the addition of Be into the barrier enhances the Cd composition and the quantum size effect of optically active QDs. Additionally, surface phonons from QDs are observed in CdZnSe/ZnBeSe nanostructures.

Piezoelectric materials can convert mechanical and electrical energy, a particularly useful tool in developing micro and nanoscale systems. Characterizing the electromechanical behavior is essential to the design and optimization of the material's and device's performance. This paper examines the influence of boundary (clamping) conditions, relative thickness variations between the active one to two micron thick piezoelectric membrane and underlying passive support structure, and the electrode coverage on the electromechanical behavior. Membranes were fabricated with silicon and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) with a ratio of Zr to Ti of 40:60 that provide thickness ratios between 1:2 and 2:1 by depositing the PZT using sequential solution deposition. PZT films contain a tensile stress that accumulates during processing, therefore a compressive stressed layer of tungsten was sputtered on bulk micromachined membranes to produce a near zero net residual stress. A nonlinear finite element numerical simulation technique is utilized for the analysis of the composite thin film. A comparison between the behavioral trends determined by simulation and experimental methods will be discussed.

A 2,3-dibutoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene comonomer was incorporated into a distyrylbenzene derivative 11. Novel 1,2-disubstituted-3,6-dibromobenzene comonomers 15 and 18 were prepared by directed metallation. Copolymerization of 11with a 9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diboronate ester 1 yielded a green fluorescent polymer while copolymerization of 15 and 18 with the 9,9-dihexylfluorene-2,7-diboronate 22 afforded promising blue fluorescent polymers 23 and 24 respectively.

The transmission disequilibrium test (TDT), designed as a test of linkage in the presence of association (i.e. linkage disequilibrium), has received considerable attention in the recent statistical genetics literature due to its advantages over other within-family analytic methods. One limitation of the conventional TDT is its application solely to linkage disequilibrium between a genetic marker and a single categorical trait (e.g. presence or absence of a disease). In this paper, we present an extension of the TDT using logistic regression to examine the relation between a candidate gene or genetic marker and one or more continuous or categorical explanatory variables. This logistic regression extension of the TDT possesses all of the desirable features of the conventional TDT, as well as many advantages associated with traditional regression analysis. We describe the model and its properties, as well as a number of its possible applications, and apply it to examine linkage disequilibrium between the dopamine receptor D2 gene (DRD2) and symptoms of childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We also briefly compare the logistic regression TDT to other quantitative TDTs that have been proposed in the literature, and highlight the advantages of a regression-based approach for examining the relation between a candidate gene and one or more continuous or categorical traits. Given its features, we regard the logistic regression extension of the TDT as a flexible new data analytic method with extensive potential applications to problems in medical, psychiatric, and behavioral genetics.
