Academic Medical Centers strive to create multidisciplinary research teams to produce impactful science. However, few faculty researchers receive training in “team science,” a well-established concept in business research and practice. Responding to demand for assistance developing effective research teams, the Collaboration and Team Science Program of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) at Wake Forest School of Medicine (WFSM) partnered with faculty from the Wake Forest University (WFU) School of Business with expertise in leadership, management, and team building. We initiated a needs assessment, including a written survey from a diverse set of 42 research scientists as well as semi-structured interviews with 8 researchers. In response to identified needs, we developed training sessions and consultations to teach teams to implement two tools known to enhance team dynamics: (1) Team charter, a document that defines the team’s purpose, goals, roles, and strategies; and (2) Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed (RACI) matrix, a table or spreadsheet that clarifies tasks and accountability. Since 2018, 10 teams and over 100 individuals have attended training sessions and 6 teams received personalized team consults. We describe these tools, present a formal analysis of quantitative results, and highlight the next steps being taken in response to these findings.

The radiosensitivity of a wild-type (+/+) laboratory strain of Tribolium confusum Jacquelin duVal was compared with that of an extra-large (xl/xl) strain known to differ in only a single locus. Differences in both longevity and fecundity between the two strains after irradiation were very highly significant (p < 0.001), but real differences between strains in these biological characteristics may have produced the differential response. When differences in longevity and fecundity were corrected for the unirradiated control, there were only minor differences in response between the two strains. Thus, physical size alone apparently did not greatly influence the comparative radiosensitivity for the two strains of this species.

When female Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) were sequentially paired with male T. castaneum and then with male T. confusum Jacquelin duVal, 93% of the eggs hatched after the first confinement but only 58.9% hatched after the second confinement. The reciprocal order of pairing produced 0% hatch after the first week of confinement and 55.2% hatch after the second week of confinement. However, the numbers of progeny produced as a result of both sequences were proportional to the percentage hatch. Thus, T. castaneum females appeared to have mated with, and utilized sperm from, males of both species for egg fertilization.
When T. confusum females were sequentially paired in the same way, reductions in egg hatch and production of progeny did not occur. The females either did not mate with T. castaneum males, or if they did mate, they did not utilize T. castaneum sperm for egg fertilization. Moreover the percentage of egg hatch and the numbers of progeny produced were not affected by the sequential order of males as long as one of them was T. confusum.

NiZr powders produced by mechanical alloying become active NO decomposition catalysts after an activation period in reaction conditions. Although the initially glassy structure exhibits a high activity, the NiZr powder becomes temporarily inactive. After about 10 hours in reaction conditions at 673 K, the powder again becomes active with a lower, but still substantial turnover frequency for NO decomposition. Oxygen produced by the reaction appears to be consumed by the catalyst during this second period of activity.
