Adhesion between cells and other cells (cell–cell adhesion) or other tissue components (cell–matrix adhesion) is an intrinsically non-local phenomenon. Consequently, a number of recently developed mathematical models for cell adhesion have taken the form of non-local partial differential equations, where the non-local term arises inside a spatial derivative. The mathematical properties of such a non-local gradient term are not yet well understood. Here we use sophisticated estimation techniques to show local and global existence of classical solutions for such examples of adhesion-type models, and we provide a uniform upper bound for the solutions. Further, we discuss the significance of these results to applications in cell sorting and in cancer invasion and support the theoretical results through numerical simulations.

Doping of silicon with chalcogens (S, Se, Te) by femtosecond laser irradiation to concentrations well above the solubility limit leads to near-unity optical absorptance in the visible and infrared (IR) range and is a promising route toward silicon-based IR optoelectronics. However, open questions remain about the nature of the IR absorptance and in particular about the impact of the dopant distribution and possible role of dopant diffusion. Here we use electron tomography using a high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) detector in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to extract information about the three-dimensional distribution of selenium dopants in silicon and correlate these findings with the optical properties of selenium-doped silicon. We quantify the tomography results to extract information about the size distribution and density of selenium precipitates. Our results show correlation between nanoscale distribution of dopants and the observed sub-band gap optical absorptance and demonstrate the feasibility of HAADF-STEM tomography for the investigation of dopant distribution in highly-doped semiconductors.

Electrical transport and microstructure of interfaces between nm-thick films of various perovskite oxides grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on TiO2- terminated SrTiO3 (STO) substrates are compared. LaAlO3/STO and KTaO3/STO interfaces become quasi-2DEG after a critical film thickness of 4 unit cell layers. The conductivity survives long anneals in oxygen atmosphere. LaMnO3/STO interfaces remain insulating for all film thicknesses and NdGaO3/STO interfaces are conducting but the conductivity is eliminated after oxygen annealing. Medium-energy ion spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy detect cationic intermixing within several atomic layers from the interface in all studied interfaces. Our results indicate that the electrical reconstruction in the polar oxide interfaces is a complex combination of different mechanisms, and oxygen vacancies play an important role.

In a Dutch population group neutralizing antibodies against mumps virus were determined by a plaque reduction technique, which proved reproducible, sensitive and specific. The results with sera of about 800 suburban children show that mumps is acquired at an early age with peak acquisition rates between the ages of four and six years. Over 90% have acquired mumps before the age of 14 years. More than 95% of about 1000 adults (18–05 years) have neutralizing antibodies. The relatively constant median titre suggests that antibodies persist during life.
During a family study 77 clinical and 18 subclinical cases were observed. In families with index cases the attack rate was 26/37 = 0·71. Eleven children (excluding six babies) esćaped infection. The mean attack rate during the epidemic was 0·30. The mean titre of mumps neutralizing antibody is maximal during the first year after the disease but declines during childhood. Mothers exposed to mumps in the family occasionally showed a significant rise in titre. Some seronegative mothers remained seronegative after exposure.

This paper has two purposes: to define the concept of corporatism and to predict that a corporatist economic system is the most likely development for the United Kingdom over the next five to ten years. While the prediction logically presumes a concept of corporatism, the two parts of the paper are separable; the reasonableness of the definition and the accuracy of the prediction are distinct issues.

The ESA observatory INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory) is dedicated to fine imaging and spectroscopy in the energy range 15 keV to 10 Mev with concurrent X-ray (3-35 keV) and optical monitoring. It was launched on October 17, 2002 and has been succesfully operating ever since. Its two main instruments the spectrometer SPI – optimized for high resolution spectroscopy – and the imager IBIS – optimized for for high resolution imaging – are complemented by the X-ray monitor JEM-X and the optical monitor OMC. All the high energy instruments use coded mask techniques, allowing imaging in the gamma-ray range and combining wide fields of view with high spatial resolution. The presentation gives an overview of the unique properties of INTEGRAL.

The CCTF (formerly named CCDS) held its 14th meeting on 20-22 April 1999. Following the discussions, seven Recommendations were adopted and submitted to the Comité International des Poids et Mesures (CIPM). The list is the following:
1. Recommendation S 1 (1999): Mise-en-pratique of the definition of the second.
2. Recommendation S 2 (1999): On stating uncertainty in comparisons involving primary frequency standards.
3. Recommendation S 3 (1999): On the comparison of primary frequency standards.
4. Recommendation S 4 (1999): On the use of multi-channel and multi-code GPS and GLONASS time receivers.
5. Recommendation S 5 (1999): Time and frequency comparisons using GPS phase and code measurements.
6. Recommendation S 6 (1999): Future global navigation satellite systems.
7. Recommendation S 7 (1999): On Two-Way Satellite Time and Frequency Transfer
Additionally discussed were the present form of UTC and mostly the interest of preserving the leap second. The advantages and disadvantages of several options regarding the future use of leap seconds were compared. The CCTF, however, felt that it did not have the authority to propose any action. Then CCTF decided to ask the BIPM Director to write to the relating international bodies including IAU so as to draw their attentions to this issue while recommending the usage of TAI in case a time scale without discontinuity is needed. Also it was decided, in order to make more expedite the process, to ask the opinions of the various Commissions of the Scientific Unions.

Partially due to their lack of periodic structure, quasicrystals have inherently low thermal conductivity on the order of 1 - 3 W/m-K. AlPdMn quasicrystals exhibit favorable room temperature values of electrical conductivity, 500–800 (Ω-cm)-1, and thermopower, 80 μV/K, with respect to thermoelectric applications. In an effort to further increase the thermopower and hopefully minimize the thermal conductivity via phonon scattering, quartenary Al71Pd21Mn8-XReX quasicrystals were grown. X-ray data confirms that the addition of a fourth element does not alter the quasiperiodicity of the sample. Al71Pd21Mn8-XReX quasicrystals of varying Re concentration were synthesized where x had values of 0, 0.08, 0.25, 0.4, 0.8, 2, 5, 6, and 8. Both thermal and electrical transport property measurements have been performed and are reported.

Infrared radiation, which couples with vibrations in molecules and solids, has long been considered as a promising way to selectively control chemical reactions, materials processing, and biomedical applications. The expectation is that particular frequencies couple to specific atomic motions, in contrast to heat which imparts energy indiscriminately. The promise has yet to be fulfilled, but recent successes and the development of new lasers have rekindled interest. We report calculations of the dynamics of solids and molecules under intense infrared radiation. In solids, using a model calculation, we find that narrowly-defined “windows of opportunity” exist for resonant enhancement of impurity diffusion at moderate intensities. In molecules, using a generalization of Car-Parrinello dynamics, we find that, for very intense fields, energy absorption at normal modes is not very efficient and that selective bond-breaking may occur at nonresonant frequencies by “concerted kicks”. Finally, time-dependent density functional theory is used to show that the effect of very intense infrared radiation on atoms and molecules is to produce very high harmonics as found experimentally.

As device geometries continue to scale down, a larger portion of the circuit delay is contributed by interconnects, and the majority of this delay is due to capacitive loading. The replacement of plasma-deposited SiO2 as an intermetal dielectric with an insulator of lower dielectric constant can provide performance improvement through the reduction of capacitance.
A commercially available polyimide, BiPhenylene DiAnhydride – Phenylene DiAmine, BPDA-PDA, with an out-of-plane dielectric constant 3.0, is evaluated by integration with AI(Cu) in a double level metal, BiCMOS 4MB SRAM device, with 0.5μm groundrules. Process challenges unique to integration of an organic rather than inorganic insulator are described and experimental features concerning process integration, particularly via etch, Al(Cu) deposition, adhesion and moisture management are presented.

A powerful young supernova remnant (SNR) similar to Cas A has recently been discovered in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449. We have obtained X-ray, optical and ultraviolet data which allow us to investigate possible models for this object and estimate its age. Several lines of argument indicate a massive star of order 25 M⊙ as the precursor to this remnant. If the x-ray emission is attributed to a reverse shock in the ejecta, the remnant should be ∼ 120 years old.

The topic of this paper really falls somewhere between this session on active galaxies and the session on clusters. What I will report is really a cluster phenomenon but one which depends on the presence of a dominant, massive galaxy in the cluster. Specifically, we have detected several X-ray emission lines from the vicinity of M87 in the Virgo Cluster and NGC 1275 in Perseus. The lines are indicative of material which is cooler than the bulk of the intracluster gas. This material is most likely accreting onto the central galaxy with the accretion rate controlled by the rate of radiative cooling.
The observations I am reporting were made with the Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS)on the Einstein Observatory. The instrument is a Bragg crystal spectrometer which has a resolving power (E/ΔE) of 50 to 500 over the energy range of 0.2 to 3 keV. It operates much like an optical scanner in that it has a narrow passband which is swept over some restricted spectral range containing an emission line. Detailed descriptions are given elsewhere (Canizares et al. 1977, 1979, Giacconi et al. 1979).
