Background
Psychopathy is a personality disorder associated with severe emotional and interpersonal consequences and persistent antisocial behavior. Neurobiological models of psychopathy emphasize impairments in emotional processing, attention, and integration of information across large-scale neural networks in the brain. One of the largest integrative hubs in the brain is the corpus callosum (CC) – a large white matter structure that connects the two cerebral hemispheres.
MethodThe current study examines CC volume, measured via Freesurfer parcellation, in a large sample (n = 495) of incarcerated men who were assessed for psychopathic traits using the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R).
ResultsPsychopathy was associated with reduced volume across all five sub-regions of the CC. These relationships were primarily driven by the affective/interpersonal elements of psychopathy (PCL-R Factor 1), as no significant associations were found between the CC and the lifestyle/antisocial traits of psychopathy. The observed effects were not attributable to differences in substance use severity, age, IQ, or total brain volume.
ConclusionsThese findings align with suggestions that core psychopathic traits may be fostered by reduced integrative capacity across large-scale networks in the brain.

We propose that generational differences are meaningful despite some theoretical and methodological challenges (cf. Costanza & Finkelstein, 2015). We will address five main issues: operationalizing generations, measuring generational differences, theoretical models of generations, mechanisms of generational change, and the importance of science versus stereotypes.

A tendency to extract spurious, message-like meaning from meaningless noise was assessed as a risk factor leading to shizophrenia-spectrum disorders by assessing word length of speech illusions elicited by multispeaker babble in 43 people with prodromal symptoms. These individuals were randomised to olanzapine v. placebo groups during year 1 followed by no pharmacological treatment for those with no disorder conversion during year 2. A time-dependent Cox regression analysis of conversion to schizophrenia-spectrum disorder revealed a significant interaction between condition (olanzapine v. no drug) and length of speech illusion, with the latter strongly predicting subsequent conversion during medication-free intervals but not during olanzapine treatment.

The electromyographic (EMG) responses to tendon taps at the ankle and ensuing muscular twitch forces and temporal parameters were studied at varying angles across the joint range in 18 children, aged 3 to 14.9 years, with congenital hemiparetic cerebral palsy and 22 healthy (control) children, aged 3 to 13.6 years. Those subjects with hemiparesis were community ambulators without assistance. In all subjects, passive muscle stretch caused a waxing of the reflex EMG and twitch force near neutral (with the sole of the foot at right angles to the tibia) and a diminution of these with further dorsiflexion. Twitch times increased with each dorsiflexing increment, being slowest at maximum dorsiflexion and fastest at the resting plantarflexion angle. Heterogeneity of the hemiparetic-limb data is evident when compared with data of non-paretic and unaffected limbs, with clear differences in the clonic (fast twitch) as opposed to non-clonic (slow twitch) muscles. In four cases with clinical clonus, clonus frequency was reduced by passive dorsiflexion. Plaster immobilization for 1 month produced clonus which was previously absent in one subject, and caused a fast-twitch phenotype to emerge in two subjects. Follow-up after heel-cord lengthening in one subject showed that clonus frequency diminished from 9 to 3 Hz with slowing and strengthening of muscle-twitch phenotype. Short- and long-term peripheral manipulations appear to regulate neuromuscular excitability according to whether muscles are loaded or unloaded. Although damage to the nervous system provides the setting for reflex excitability, the data suggest that the muscle length (which specifies the joint angle) and the muscle-twitch phenotype of any given limb for any given case appear to dictate the actual speed and strength of reflex muscle-twitch and clonus profiles. This study illustrates how peripheral manipulations of muscles and tendons may alter the expression of what have hitherto been considered as exclusively central phenomena.

It would be impossible within the brief compass of this paper to give even a fraction of the chronological developments in the complicated story of the close inter-relationships of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad with the mining and manufacturing interests of northern Alabama in the formative years of the 1870's and 1880's. Instead, this paper is intended to show in somewhat broader outline how that railroad entered the Birmingham region after the Civil War and something of the scope of information relative to that region's development that can be obtained from the business records of this railroad. It is also the intention of this paper to give some insight into the importance of the role of the railroad outside of its usual part as a carrier only. In the encouragement of traffic peculiar to its own region it was expedient for a railroad to favor some industries over others, some areas over others, some businessmen over others. It was important for the flow of traffic that certain communities be encouraged at the expense of others. Although the physical presence of the railroad itself may account for some alteration in the established patterns of regional economy, the conscious, active, and deliberate attempts of the railroad management to influence the direction of regional growth may well be considered as determining factors.
