Summary
The first brief essay argues that although the body of Richard Wright's works, his legacy, retains a special relevance in multiple discourses about human and civil rights, systemic racism, and transnational efforts to address global social injustice, it is dangerous, both in traditional scholarship and in non-academic commentary, to incarcerate his works within a single ideology or within the framework of current ideologies that give special credibility to #BlackLivesMatter. Indeed, such a framing of legacies may lead critics to be complicit in producing confusion and error which serve to undermine the primal strength of Wright's legacy: the exceptional value of asking questions that provoke pragmatic responses rather than seemingly definitive answers. We ought not abandon the dialectics of the concrete and the dialogic of the imaginary as we argue for the value of Wright's legacy in temporal evolutions. The essay draws special attention to the vexed efforts of Christopher J. Lebron to explain the origins of #BlackLivesMatter. Dealing adequately with Wright's legacy involves a willingness to engage the problematic of what Roseann Liu and Savannah Shange propose is thick solidarity, the willingness to respect the layering of " interpersonal empathy with historical analysis, political acumen, and a willingness to be led by those most directly impacted as the subjects and the objects of history. The second essay tentatively concludes that we continue to examine and re-examine Wright's legacy inside of and outside of #BlackLivesMatter. Richard Wright’s class-conscious writings of the 1930s-1940s makes use of Marxism to help us think through the relationship between the individual and the social totality; race and class; “black lives” and “all lives.” In what sense is Bigger Thomas a “native son”? How do the hands in “I Have Seen Black Hands” relate to the laboring hands of the rest of the working class? Wright’s revolutionary communist standpoint, mediating between the particular and the general, what is and what can be, requires us to think dialectically past the limitations of a reformist politics of redistribution and inclusion.

Physical interventions, including restraint, are a necessary but controversial component of mental health care. This paper outlines developments in one trust to prioritise this area and take an integrated, whole trust approach. The paper discusses ‘physical interventions’, describes the organisational approach to support the development and outlines the training package developed to promote safe and effective practice. In addition the approach is reviewed using team members' views within the National Patient Safety Agency's seven steps to patient safety. Data on incidences of interventions prior to and following the approach are presented and conclusions and recommendations to further guide practice are proposed.

The first major twenty-first century history of four hundred years of black writing, The Cambridge History of African American Literature presents a comprehensive overview of the literary traditions, oral and print, of African-descended peoples in the United States. Expert contributors, drawn from the United States and beyond, emphasise the dual nature of each text discussed as a work of art created by an individual and as a response to unfolding events in American cultural, political, and social history. Unprecedented in scope, sophistication and accessibility, the volume draws together current scholarship in the field. It also looks ahead to suggest new approaches, new areas of study, and as yet undervalued writers and works. The Cambridge History of African American Literature is a major achievement both as a work of reference and as a compelling narrative and will remain essential reading for scholars and students in years to come.

Summary
In the twenty-first century, literary histories may achieve a limited degree of comprehensiveness in dealing with a vast amount of literary and cultural data; the idea that they might be definitive is merely tantalizing. We are cautioned to remember, as Mario J. Valdés and Linda Hutcheon have suggested in Rethinking Literary History: A Dialogue on Theory, that “the literary past” – that is, the past of both literature's production and its reception – is unavoidably interpreted in the light of the present and that literary historians create meaning by ordering and shaping stories about texts and contexts; in short, “economic, political, and broader cultural and social perspectives on issues like race or gender must be brought to bear in the constructing of any literary history today in a different way than in the past.” These premises about writing history assume great importance in a project that focuses on the continuing evolution of African American literature, because the subject is intimately related to such matters as the slave trade and the curious institution of slavery in the United States; the forced merger of African ethnic groups into an identity named African American; new forms of verbal expression which are the consequence of contact among Africans, indigenous peoples, and Europeans; struggles for emancipation and literacy; race as a social dynamic, and the changing ideologies that support the American democratic experiment. The writing of literary history, of course, must cross disciplinary boundaries, for it cannot otherwise provide nuanced reports on the indeterminacy of texts.

The descending aorta appears small relative to unusually large pulmonary arteries in infants with atrioventricular septal defects. To determine whether this discrepancy in great arterial size influences the outcome after repair of atrioventricular septal defects, we reviewed our experience with 34 infants younger than one-year-old undergoing primary repair. There were four early deaths (11.8%), one in 16 patients with normal chromosomes (6.3%), and three of 18 with Down's syndrome (16.7%). There was no difference between survivors and non-survivors in terms of either the size of the aorta at the level of the diaphragm (descending aortic index, 149±34 versus 139±46 mm2/m2), the pulmonary arterial index (675±170 versus 745±182 mm2/m2), or the ratio of the descending aorta to the pulmonary trunk arterial (4.85±1.6 versus 5.93±2.8). Compared with survivors, non-survivors had higher ratios of vascular resistance (0.48±0.42 versus 0.23±0.14, p<0.05), and tended to have larger preoperative cardiothoracic ratios (0.63±0.05 versus 0.55±0.08, p=0.12) Compared to patients with normal chromosomes, the patients with Down's syndrome tended to have smaller descending aortas (140±34 versus 159±34 mm2/m2, p=0.12), higher ratios of vascular resistance (0.32±0.2 versus 0.18±0.1, p=0.08), and higher mean pulmonary arterial pressures (47±11 versus 39±18 mm Hg, p=0.12), suggesting that pulmonary vascular obstructive disease may be more severe in patients with Down's syndrome. The size of the descending aorta and pulmonary arteries do not influence outcome after repair of atrioventricular septal defect in infants.

Summary
In the early years of the twenty-first century, a discussion of the American protest novel or of Richard Wright as a protest novelist is an exercise in retrospection. It seems from certain angles of critical thought that literary history demands a deliberate, not always happy, effort to remember things past. The glance back privileges the claims of history over the speculations of aesthetics. It is especially necessary to let history speak in the case of Wright and the African American novel. Our postmodern sense of aesthetics can betray us and muddle our understanding of the necessity for protesting social policies and cultural beliefs through the mechanism of the novel. Looking backward helps us to remember at least two points. The African American novel originated in the nineteenth century as the use of literacy and writing more for purposes of enlightenment than for the pleasures of entertainment. Richard Wright stands in a special relationship to the form he sought to develop, because he did not abandon the original purposes of the black novel for the sake of being modern.
