Collision phenomena involving the smallest solid objects and inert solid surfaces have been explored by the method of mass-selective time-of-flight and angular measurements of the surface-collision dynamics of ionized cluster beams. At lowest energy, both transient physisorption (soft-landing) and intact scattering have been observed. Impact of nanocrystalline sodium-fluoride clusters (NanFn-1+) against graphite at intermediate energy (0.2 - 1 eV per atom) leads efficiently to fracture-like processes. At higher energy, a featureless evaporative cascade dominates the fragment distribution. Energy- and angle-resolved scattering of mass-selected clusters from oriented graphite is shown to be a versatile method for investigation of cluster structure-energetics, cluster-surface interactions, and sticking phenomena.

Techniques of molecular genetics, including recombinant-DNA technology, are likely to have a key role in modern psychiatric research and practice. This article reviews some methods of DNA analysis and their applications to clinical science: specifically, how these methods can be used to localise, identify, isolate, and clone clinically important genes, and how this should enable us to elucidate the molecular pathology of most inherited (psychiatric) disorders. The implications of these developments for prevention and treatment of genetic disease are discussed.

Recent family studies of manic-depressive psychosis have emphasized the role of genetics in the aetiology of this bipolar illness (3, 8). However, the mode of genetic transmission is still unknown, the main controversy being between major gene and polygenic inheritance. Furthermore, it is not yet evident whether bipolar illness constitutes a homogeneous entity or whether it may be subdivided into different genetic subgroups. Mendlewicz, Fieve, Rainer, and Fleiss (1) recently produced some evidence that bipolar psychosis can be differentiated into two subgroups on the basis of family history data. Two matched samples of 30 patients each were studied, distinguished by the presence or absence of bipolar illness in their first degree relatives. The patients with a positive family history (FH+) in first degree relatives showed earlier onset of illness and more psychotic symptoms occurring in the manic phase. Alcoholism, if present, was of an episodic pattern. In patients with a negative family history (FH—), there was a later onset of illness; psychotic symptoms occurred usually in the depressive phase; and alcoholism, when present, tended to be chronic.

We have recently had the opportunity to investigate clinical and behavioural characteristics of a pair of 17-year-old twin boys who were discovered to have the XYY karyotype (18). Since these twins, known to this department since infancy, had been studied at the age of three, early direct findings as well as retrospective data are available regarding their symptoms and development.
