The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is an ongoing time-series, near-infrared (IR) survey of the Galactic bulge and an adjacent portion of the inner disk, covering 562 square degrees of the sky, using ESO's VISTA telescope. The survey has provided superb multi-color photometry in 5 broadband filters (Z, Y, J, H, and Ks), leading to the best map of the inner Milky Way ever obtained, particularly in the near-IR. The main part of the survey, which is focused on the variability in the Ks-band, is currently underway, with bulge fields observed between 34 and 73 times, and disk fields between 34 and 36 times. When the survey is complete, bulge (disk) fields will have been observed up to a total of 100 (60) times, providing unprecedented depth and time coverage in the near-IR. Here we provide a first overview of stellar variability in the VVV data.

Summary
Professionalism has become something of a contemporary preoccupation. The public's persistent worry about professionals, often somewhat misleadingly described as concern about professional “ethics,” is in fact a suspicion that professionals have broken faith with the public. Frequently, especially in popular journalism, the accusation is that professionals have abandoned the public; they have become self-protective and aloof from the significance of what they do.
INTRODUCTION: FRAMING THE ISSUE
This book is devoted to the teaching and learning of medical professionalism. As is true of virtually all discussions of medical professionalism, its principal focus is on what individual physicians and the professional bodies composing organized medicine can and must do to sustain medical professionalism. So too was the focus of the physician Charter, which has been hailed appropriately as a milestone in the profession's efforts to fulfill its contract with society. The Charter called on physicians to affirm three principles underlying professionalism – the primacy of patient interest, patient autonomy, and social justice – and laid out ten categories of responsibilities for physicians to discharge in actualizing those principles.
Clearly, the need for physicians, both individually and collectively, to understand the nature of professionalism, to exemplify the attributes and behaviors required to manifest professionalism, and to appreciate the contemporary threats to professionalism's continued survival cannot be overestimated. But its critical importance notwithstanding, such inwardly directed emphasis leaves unexamined the public's stake in medical professionalism and the role the public must play to ensure that it continues to obtain the benefits of professionalism.

Summary
The leadership and management of academic health centers are increasingly in the spotlight during these uncertain times at the dawn of the 21st century. Many business leaders and management experts have openly recognized the more complex array of challenges that face chief executive officers of academic health centers (AHCs) compared with those faced by the average corporate leader. It has been repeatedly shown to be exceedingly difficult to implement standard business management strategies within the environment that has evolved from the deeply rooted culture of American university-based AHCs.
Great leaders are often depicted as shepherds, but great shepherds lead flocks of sheep or cows, accustomed to work together in going where the shepherd leads. Great shepherds do not shepherd cats, but herding cats is in fact one over-simplified way of describing the leadership and management challenge facing AHCs. We need leaders and management tools that can get cats to work as a team for institutional goals. AHC leaders need to create an organizational culture with incentives sufficient to sustain required integration. The culture must foster coordination and collaboration not only among individual cats, but also among the several species of cats composing the various silos typical of our academic centers. How to herd academic health center cats is one of the themes this book addresses.
Clearly, many changes have occurred and much progress has been made over the past decade in re-shaping our academic organizations to meet their challenges. We must not lose sight of that.
