Summary
Introduction
This chapter will examine how religion/spirituality plays an important role as a resource used by most people in coping with the immediate, as well as longer-term, consequences of highly stressful or traumatic experiences. First, working definitions of the key concepts of resilience and religion/spirituality will be given. Distinctions are made between definitions for general communications and operational definitions suitable for clinical and research purposes. Spirituality is conceptualized as a dynamic process that is an integral and inseparable part of humanity. A current conceptual model of spirituality as being multidimensional in nature is presented, and core dimensions are described. Findings from a selective review of current studies on religion and/or spirituality and resilience are presented. Four key obstacles, or “spiritual red flags,” are identified, and a group therapy module for addressing them is presented. Finally, conclusions about our current knowledge, as well as recommendations for future clinical and research applications are made.
Spirituality is acknowledged as an important part of life by most individuals. Annual Gallup polls consistently show that more than 90% of the US population report a “belief in God,” and approximately 70% report affiliation with a faith community and attending religious services. In addition, religion or spirituality has been consistently linked to positive mental (Nooney & Woodrum, 2002) and physical (Powell et al., 2003) health functioning, as well as increased longevity (Oxman et al., 1995). When mental health services are sought, clergy are most frequently the first point of contact, with more than 40% seeking counseling from them rather than mental health providers (Weaver et al., 1997). In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001, more than 90% of those surveyed reported that they coped by “turning to religion,” second only to “talking with others,” which was endorsed by 98% (Schuster et al., 2001). However, despite the widely recognized positive aspects of religion or spirituality, there are large gaps in our scientific knowledge of the dynamic processes of spirituality that could explain these relationships.

Low color, space environmentally stable, polymeric materials with sufficient electrical conductivity for static charge dissipation are of interest for potential applications on Gossamer spacecraft. One method of imparting electrical conductivity while maintaining optical clarity is through the use of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Both theory and research on SWNTs have shown them to be conductive. However, SWNTs are very difficult to uniformly disperse in a polymer. The approach described herein was to use oligomers endcapped with functional groups that could condense with functionalities present on purified, laser ablated SWNTs. Low color, radiation resistant amide acid oligomers endcapped with trialkoxysilane groups were combined with SWNTs. Since the SWNTs were purified by an oxidative process (nitric/sulfuric acid treatment), they have functionalities such as hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups that can condense with the terminal alkoxysilane groups. After mixing at room temperature, the mixtures were used to cast films that were subsequently stage-cured up to 300°C for 1 hour in air. During this thermal treatment, imidization and condensation occurred. The chemistry, physical, and mechanical properties of the resulting nancomposite films will be presented.

Polymer-single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) composite films were prepared and characterized as part of an effort to develop polymeric materials with improved combinations of properties for potential use on future spacecraft. Next generation spacecraft will require ultra-lightweight materials that possess specific and unique combinations of properties such as radiation and atomic oxygen resistance, low solar absorptivity, high thermal emissitivity, electrical conductivity, tear resistance, ability to be folded and seamed, and good mechanical properties. The objective of this work is to incorporate sufficient electrical conductivity into space durable polyimides to mitigate static charge build-up. The challenge is to obtain this level of conductivity (10-8 S/cm) without degrading other properties of importance, particularly optical transparency. Several different approaches were attempted to fully disperse the SWNTs into the polymer matrix. These included high shear mixing, sonication, and synthesizing the polymers in the presence of pre-dispersed SWNTs. Acceptable levels of conductivity were obtained at loading levels less than one tenth weight percent SWNT without significantly sacrificing optical properties. Characterization of the nanocomposite films and the effect of SWNT concentration and dispersion on the conductivity, solar absorptivity, thermal emissivity, mechanical and thermal properties were discussed. Fibers and non-woven porous mats of SWNT reinforced polymer nanocomposite were produced using electrospinning.

This paper presents our experience with four cases of impacted laryngeal foreign bodies. A review of the literature reveals that the condition is rare, but far more dramatic and life threatening than bronchial foreign bodies. The history may not indicate the diagnosis, especially in the ethnic minority races where there is a language barrier. Suspicion of the diagnosis by the causalty officer and the immediate attendance of an experienced otolaryngologist may be life saving.
Radiological examination is not necessary where the diagnosis is obvious. If the diagnosis is in doubt it must be remembered that many foreign bodies are not radio-opaque. The patient must be accompanied at all times by an otolaryngologist until the foreign body is removed.
