Although floatplanes were not popular during the war years, new types have made their appearance since, and presumably, for certain classes of work, more will be seen in the future. With this in mind, this paper is presented in the hope that it may help in assessing the float weights on any new designs that are contemplated. Some suggestions are included concerning geometry and design which, if adopted, may help to show a higher weight efficiency than existing practice.
The paper is based upon an analysis of the weight and geometrical data relating to a large number of floats, although since the number built during recent years is small, a certain amount of data, which might possibly be considered old by some standards, has been incorporated. As will be seen by the curves, recent practice shows no radical departure from earlier years and the inclusion of the early data to establish design trends would appear to be warranted.

In this paper an attempt has been made to trace the influence of gross weight, as the accepted measure of size, upon the dimensions of hulls and fuselages and from this, to evaluate the probable trend of the weights of these components with increasing gross weight.
During the past few years the size and gross weight of aircraft have rapidly increased and there appears at the moment little, if any, structural limit upon the size and gross weights attainable, since it can be shown that the percentage weights of hulls and fuselages tend to decrease as size increases.

This lecture does not set out any new method or offer any ideas to enable the design office to start cutting down the weights of new projects.
The last lecture dealing with the weight of aircraft was given by Major T. M. Barlow, M.Sc, M.Inst.C.E., M.I.Mech.E., F.R.Ae.S., in 1929.

To identify the epidemiological and genetic characteristics of norovirus (NoV) outbreaks and estimate the impact of NoV infections in an older population, we analysed epidemiological and laboratory data collected using standardized methods from long-term care facilities (LTCFs) during 2003–2006. Faecal specimens were tested for NoV by real-time reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction. NoV strains were genotyped by sequencing. Of the 234 acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks reported, 163 (70%) were caused by NoV. The annual attack rate of outbreak-associated NoV infection in LTCF residents was 4%, with a case-hospitalization rate of 3·1% and a case-fatality rate of 0·5%. GII.4 strains accounted for 84% of NoV outbreaks. Median duration of illness was longer for GII.4 infections than non-GII.4 infections (33 vs. 24 h, P<0·001). Emerging GII.4 strains (Hunter/2004, Minerva/2006b, Terneuzen/2006a) gradually replaced the previously dominant strain (Farmington Hills/2002) during 2004–2006. NoV GII.4 strains are now associated with the majority of AGE outbreaks in LTCFs and prolonged illness in Oregon.

The performance of a 15-cm-radius applied-magnetic-field ion diode was investigated on the PBFA II accelerator at a power of 23 TW. The power coupling between the accelerator and diode was measured and compared with numerical simulations that show the effects of the electron flow in the MITL. The power coupled to the cathode of the diode was 18 MW. Measurements of the lithium beam generated from an electric-field-emission LiF anode showed a lithium beam power of 9 TW. The lithium beam was ballistically focused in a gas cell filled with 2 torr argon. The resultant focused power density was ∼1.8 TW/cm2 equivalent on a cylindrical target at the centerline of the diode. The focused power was limited by the 20- to 30-mR divergence of the beam caused by the LiF source used and by virtual cathode instabilities in the anode–cathode gap. The ion mode instability in the virtual cathode was studied extensively by measurement of waves in the ion emission pattern from the anode and of the E-P0 correlation between variations in the beam energy and transverse momentum. The instability Played a dominant role in the limitation of the focused lithium power.

The development of high power ion diodes for inertial confinement fusion is in progress on the PBFA I accelerator. The three main types of magnetically-insulated ion diodes, the Applied-B, Hybrid, and Pinch Reflex diodes, are compared. This paper presents the results from the first series of tests of the Hybrid diode.

We show that the first order theory of the lattice <ω(S) of finite dimensional closed subsets of any nontrivial infinite dimensional Steinitz Exhange System S has logical complexity at least that of first order number theory and that the first order theory of the lattice (S∞) of computably enumerable closed subsets of any nontrivial infinite dimensional computable Steinitz Exchange System S∞ has logical complexity exactly that of first order number theory. Thus, for example, the lattice of finite dimensional subspaces of a standard copy of ⊕ωQ interprets first order arithmetic and is therefore as complicated as possible. In particular, our results show that the first order theories of the lattice (V∞) of c.e. subspaces of a fully effective ℵ0-dimensional vector space V∞ and the lattice of c.e. algebraically closed subfields of a fully effective algebraically closed field F∞ of countably infinite transcendence degree each have logical complexity that of first order number theory.
