We describe the design and deployment of GREENBURST, a commensal Fast Radio Burst (FRB) search system at the Green Bank Telescope. GREENBURST uses the dedicated L-band receiver tap to search over the 960–1 920 MHz frequency range for pulses with dispersion measures out to $10^4\ \rm{pc\,cm}^{-3}$ . Due to its unique design, GREENBURST is capable of conducting searches for FRBs when the L-band receiver is not being used for scheduled observing. This makes it a sensitive single pixel detector capable of reaching deeper in the radio sky. While single pulses from Galactic pulsars and rotating radio transients will be detectable in our observations, and will form part of the database we archive, the primary goal is to detect and study FRBs. Based on recent determinations of the all-sky rate, we predict that the system will detect approximately one FRB for every 2–3 months of continuous operation. The high sensitivity of GREENBURST means that it will also be able to probe the slope of the FRB fluence distribution, which is currently uncertain in this observing band.

Although many studies have investigated bacteria on the hands of health-care workers and caregivers, few have looked at microbiological contamination on the hands of the general adult public. This study investigated faecal bacteria on the hands of commuters in five UK cities. Of the 404 people sampled 28% were found to have bacteria of faecal origin on their hands. A breakdown by city showed that the proportion of people with contaminated hands increased the further north the city of investigation (P<0·001), an effect which was due in large part to a significant trend in men but not in women. Bus users were more contaminated than train users. The results of this exploratory study indicate that hand hygiene practices in the UK may be inadequate and that faecal indicator bacteria on hands may be used to monitor the effect of hand-washing promotion campaigns.

Detailed data from a preselected release site in Tanzania were collected preparatory to testing the insect sterility concept against Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. The site was at Mkwaja Ranch, a north-eastern coastal cattle-ranching enterprise, in which about 195 km2 was encompassed by a 1-km-wide fly barrier constructed at an average cost of $37/ha. Weekly surveys of flyround transects spaced 1 km apart were conducted over a 14-month period. The estimated male density of G. m. morsitans in the release site was about 630/km2 and for G. pallidipes Aust., 255/km2. The only other species of tsetse found was G. brevipalpis Newst., which was restricted to drainage areas during periods of low rainfall.

A field trial of the sterile insect technique was conducted in Tanzania using males of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. that were reared, irradiated and packaged at Tanga. The experimental site was a 195–km2 area 110 km to the south. Following two applications of endosulfan as an aerosol at an interval of 28 days, irradiated puparia of G. m. morsitans were released twice weekly at stations distributed throughout the experimental site. Each of the 120 release stations was serviced every 14 days with puparia which produced sterile adults synchronously within 30 min after placement. Over the 15–month experimental period, an average of 81% control of G. m. morsitans was obtained, whereas G. pallidipes Aust., against which no releases were carried out, recovered to prespray levels within five months. The released sterile insects were found to be highly competitive and to survive well in the field. Immigration of indigenous flies from outside the perimeter barrier surrounding the experimental plot provided a continuous influx of fertile flies that provided the nucleus of the 19% residual population. Under operational conditions, the prevention of migration should result in the elimination of an indigenous G. m. morsitans population subjected to the combined stress of population reduction by two applications of endosulfan aerosols and sequential releases of sterile males.

Surplus puparia from a colony of about 50 000 females of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. provided males for sterilisation and release in an experimental assessment of the sterile insect technique in Tanzania. Excess males were stored late in the puparial stage at 10 ±1°C for up to four days prior to being irradiated at ambient temperatures in a nitrogen atmosphere with 11·8 krad in a radioactive caesium (137Cs) source. Puparia chilled at 8 ± 1°C were transported to the field release area twice weekly for manual release. At the release sites, the adults emerged synchronously within 60 min and were automatically marked as they crawled through sand containing fluorescent powder.

As part of a programme to test the sterile insect technique against Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. in Tanzania, two aerial applications of endosulfan were applied to a 195-km2 test area. The applications were made with a 28-day interval to provide an initial reduction in the target species prior to the release of sterile males. A Cessna 310 aircraft equipped with a rotary atomiser and operating at night was used to apply the insecticide at a dosage of about 20 g/ha. Flyround surveys within 48 h following the spraying operations indicated that a 100% reduction of G. m. morsitans adults was achieved in both applications, while G. pallidipes Aust. was reduced by 91 5% in the first and 100% in the second.

Summary
ABSTRACT
Seeds of representatives of 78 genera of the Gentianaceae were studied using scanning electron microscopy. Seeds of most taxa are relatively small, often between 0.3 mm and 0.7 mm in length. They develop from unitegmic, tenuinucellate ovules and are exotestal or sometimes have collapsed or reduced testas. In spite of their small size, the seeds show an extensive diversity in micromorphology.
Seed structure is often characteristic at the tribal, subtribal, or generic level. Testa cells vary in orientation, shape, undulation of the anticlinal walls and pitting of the inner walls. The outer wall is always thin and without a cuticular structure. Except for the inclusion of the Potaliinae, and the delimitation of the Saccifolieae, seed structure sustains the new classification of the Gentianaceae as proposed by Struwe et al. in Chapter 2 of this volume. Crystallized structures were found upon and under the exotestal cuticle of several genera of the Chironieae, Coutoubeinae, and Faroinae.
Seeds of the mycotrophic/saprophytic genera are all small and may be strongly reduced. Owing to adaptations to a saprophytic lifestyle, seed characters of saprophytes are of limited taxonomic use at the subgeneric level.
The seeds of the majority of species are dispersed by the wind. Most species are wind ballists. Endozoochorous dispersal is known in Potaliinae and in one species of Chironia. Seeds may belong to different seed bank types. Seed germination is epigeal. Seedlings are small and phanerocotylar.
