The church of St Michael and All Angels, Averham, is largely constructed of counter-pitched rubble and has long been interpreted as being of the early Norman period. Recent archaeological investigations by the authors have revealed conclusive evidence that the date of part of the fabric is pre-Conquest and that the west tower was originally a possible two-storey porch. Ground-based remote sensing has further revealed complex anomalies in the south and east walls of the tower.

In this project, we focus on the analysis of infrared observations of the clumps defined with the Galactic Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (ChaMP) (Barnes et al.2011). We derive line of sight infrared extinction values, star counts and protostar candidates around the molecular gas emission obtained with the Mopra telescope. Then, we examine the correlation between radio and infrared properties of the clumps. For this stage of the project, we use the Vela-Carina and 2MASS catalogs to obtain a preliminary understanding of the final results. For the later stages, we will extract infrared photometry from our deep AAT near-IR and Spitzer 3.6 and 4.5 μm images. With the final deep photometry results, we will compile the properties of individual clusters.

Summary
This chapter provides an account of the formation in the 1960s and development of the Gypsy Council and its successor organisations (Figure 2.1). Most accounts of the origins, trajectories and achievements of Romani organisations concentrate upon the story of how they interacted with state authorities and what result they had upon the overt policy and actions of the local and central state and, more recently, transnational organisations. Over the last 25 years narratives have been set within the banal discourse of the ‘NGO’. Although the phrase ‘non-governmental organisation’ appeared in the UN Charter of 1945 (in a rather different context), the acronym NGO was popularised only in the 1980s, through the abbreviation of the somewhat more euphonious acronym the ‘QUANGO’, or ‘quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisation’. That phrase, first used in 1967, was itself acronymised only in 1969 (Pifer, 1987), but was picked up by right-wing governments, such as the Heath government (1970–74) in the UK as the welfare state staggered under the twin shocks of the oil price rises and the rapid growth in the number of old-age pensioners and sought to outsource welfare provision to independent agencies that it nevertheless had to fund. Acknowledging that they were only quasi-autonomous, however, meant that the government was still held accountable for their performance. Neoliberal discourse swiftly dropped the ‘quasi’ bit, and reinvented government as the righteous, avenging popular regulator of the agencies that perpetually failed to manage the poor on the budgets they are given. The modern use of the term ‘NGO’ invites one to consider them only in relation to governments. How strange it is that at the very moment when the last major version of state utopian authoritarianism lost legitimacy in 1989, the neoliberal ascendancy was able thus to appropriate an inverted vision of the ubiquity of the state. Most of the Romani organisations bravely and ineffectually (according to some) taking grants across Europe to cover for the failings of the welfare state might better be termed ‘wholly non-autonomous fully funded non-governmental organisations’ (WONNAFFUNGOs).
The Gypsy Council, from its foundation in 1966 down to its local offshoots, and the two Gypsy Councils which dispute the title to be its legitimate successor today, have never been one of these WONAFFUNGOs.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae, and orphan afterglows of gamma-ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of 5 s and greater. We also present an analysis of the expected source populations that we will be able to detect with VAST.
TEM investigation of defect reduction and etch pit formation in GaN

GaN samples of this study were chemically wet etched to gain easier access to the dislocation sturcture. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed four different types of etch pits. After brief etching, several dislocations with screw component showed large etch pits, which may be correlated with the core of the screw dislocation. By means of SiNx micromasking the dislocation density could be reduced by more than one order of magnitude. The reduction of threading dislocations in the SiNx region in GaN grown on 〈0001〉 sapphire is due to bending of the threading dislocations into the {0001} plane, such that they form dislocation loops if they meet dislocations with opposite Burgers vectors. Accordingly, the achievable reduction of the dislocation density is limited by the probability that these dislocations interact. Edge dislocations bend more easily on account of their low line tension. This results in a preferential bending and reduction of dislocations with edge character.

P-type active incorporation of magnesium into the gallium nitride lattice is still a challenge for the realization of wide band gap light emitters. This work presents a detailed microstructural study of phenomena connected with the problem of Mg doping of films grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy. Transmission Electron Microscopy both in conventional and in high resolution mode are used to obtain a better understanding of the Mg related defect formation processes. It is shown that the defect formation never occurs instantaneously at the beginning of the doping but a defect free zone always precedes the onset of the defect formation. This effect cannot solely be addressed to the memory effect of the reaction chamber since it is found that the defect density oscillates during growth. A more detailed investigation reveals that segregation of Mg plays a crucial role in the formation of defects. The observations emphasize the fact that a critical surface concentration is necessary for the defects to form. Beside the known processes of inversion boundary formation it is found that small nitrogen polar GaN grains in GaN films are gradually increasing on the expense of Ga polar grains if a sufficiently high Mg coverage and film thickness is realized. This process is found to occur in alternating steps along the {1123} and {0001}planes.

Two classifications, DSM–III and catego4–derived ICD–8, included in the CIDI, are compared in 63 in-patients and out-patients with a broad range of psychiatric illness. Agreement for main diagnosis between these classifications was statistically significant for two time frames, the present state and lifetime.
