An experiment was carried out on a site where the copper content of herbage was relatively low (4·7–6·2 mg/kg d.m.) to examine the value of copper contained in soluble glass rumen boluses as a means of providing supplementary copper to calves.
Forty-five spring-born suckled calves (mean live weight 91 kg) were divided into three groups on the basis of body weight. Animals in group GB were given two boluses initially, those in group CI each received copper injections at approximately monthly intervals and those in group C remained as controls throughout. Group C calves became progressively hypocupraemic (minimum mean plasma copper 8·5 μmol/1) compared with those in groups GB and CI which showed an increase in plasma copper concentration. In addition measurements of plasma caeruloplasmin activity, blood haemoglobin concentration and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity all showed significant increases due to treatment. No response in live-weight gain was observed but overall live-weight gain was approximately 1·05 kg/day. Although the initial response in plasma copper was quicker with copper injections, measurements of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity and haemoglobin showed advantages of glass boluses not shared by copper injections. This possibly resulted from the slow release nature of copper in the glass. Under the conditions of the experiment where herbage molybdenum values were relatively low (1·2–1·9 mg/kg d.m.), copper contained in soluble glass boluses appeared to prevent hypocupraemia in calves as effectively as regular copper injections.

Selenium (Se) was first recognised as an essential nutrient in 1957. Subsequent research has shown that Se, in the form of selenocysteine, is incorporated into a range of selenoproteins in the body, which are crucial to human and animal health. The best known of these is glutathione peroxidase (GPx), which is involved in protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage by free radicals. Other selenoproteins are essential in the functioning of the immune system, in thyroid hormone metabolism and in reproduction.

Armenia is a typical highland country with an average altitude of 1800 m. More than half of its territory is occupied by natural pastures and hay producing areas which form an important source of feed material for animal husbandry. However, in recent years the country has been experiencing an acute shortage of feed materials and as a result the total number of livestock and animal derived products has drastically dropped. During the transition to a market economy the government has been unable to import additional forage materials, therefore there is a need to utilise local resources more rationally. Limited studies of the nutritive value of Armenia’s forage plants has been carried out. Moreover, in previous studies the fundamental criteria for measuring forage quality has been largely limited to an assessment of crude protein (CP), total ash (TA), crude fat (CF), nitrogen-free extractable substances (NFS) and crude cellulose (CC) contents. Only recently have studies been undertaken to assess gross energy (GE) and in-vitro digestible organic matter (OM) in the dry matter (DOMD) contents, and OM digestibility (OMD) and digestible energy (DE) value of OM. The objective of this work was to summarize the published studies on chemical composition and to discuss the results of recent measurements of energy value and in-vitro digestibility of native forages in Armenia in order to facilitate the selection and utilisation of high quality forages by farmers.

A miniaturized, polysilicon version of a xylophone bar magnetometer (with dimensions on the order of microns) has been fabricated by microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) processing techniques. All devices tested to date have performed extremely well in static magnetic fields and exhibit mechanical quality factors, Q, of up to 30,000 at reduced pressures. The resonance frequency of the fundamental flexural mode of vibration of these polysilicon xylophone bars has been found to be a sensitive function of the torsional stiffness of the support arms, in quantitative accord with an analytical model based on Bernoulli-Euler beam theory.

The principles of operation of a MEMS-based magnetometer designed on the magnetoelastic effect are described. The active transduction element is a commercial (001) silicon microcantilever sputter coated with an amorphous thin film of the giant magnetostrictive alloy Terfenol-D [(Dy0.7Tb0.3)Fe2]. The easy axis of magnetization of the Terfenol-D film lies in the plane of the microcantilever and along the acicular direction. In addition to the magnetostrictive transducer, basic components include: (a) mechanical resonance of the coated-microcantilever through coupling to an ac magnetic field; and, (b) detection by optical beam deflection of the microcantilever motion utilizing a laser diode source and a position-sensitive detector. The sensitivity of this magnetostrictive magnetometer is currently 1 μT, which is three orders of magnitude better than a magnetometer based on a similar-sized piezoresistive cantilever.
