Piston-cylinder cell assemblies experience inhomogeneous pressure distribution upon pressurization due to the variable compressibilities of the cell components. This results in the sample experiencing a pressure lower than expected, given the applied force of the piston. Although the effect is generally compensated for by applying a ‘friction’ correction, there have been wide variations in the corrections applied for some of the harder cell materials. We have determined friction correction factors for a range of cell assemblies commonly used in our laboratory relative to select well-characterized phase equilibria. Single-sleeve NaCl cells require, using the piston-in technique, very small corrections of the order −0.05 GPa for 12.7 mm diameter, and less for larger diameter assemblies. Four separate calibrations of the single sleeve 12.7 mm BaCO3 cell show that it requires a correction of −9%. This factor is entirely independent of temperature and pressure within the range 1000 to 1600°C and 1.5 to 3.2 GPa. This result is in contrast to the results of Fram and Longhi (1992) who claim that the correction for BaCO3 cells is highly dependent on pressure. For the assemblies included in this study there is an increase in the pressure correction required in the order of 12.7 mm diameter NaCl-pyrex −3%; 19 mm talc-pyrex −3.6%; 12.7 mm BaCO3 −9% and 12.7 mm BaCO3-silica glass −13%.

Pharyngo-laryngo-oesophagectomy and gastric pull-up (PLOGP) is a complex and relatively uncommon procedure. The aim of this study is to analyse the results of PLOGP in patients with post-cricoid and cervical oesophageal squamous cell carcinomas.
This study was a retrospective review of 26 patients (11 males + 15 females, mean age 63.5 years) who underwent PLOGP from 1988 to 1997. Eighteen (69 per cent) patients were staged as T3 and eight (31 per cent) T4. Eighteen (69 per cent) patients had N0, seven (27 per cent) N1 and one (four per cent) N2 disease. Multiple primary tumours were recorded in three (11.5 per cent) patients. Four (15 per cent) patients had pre-operative radiotherapy with poor response and two (eight per cent) required emergency tracheotomy prior to surgery. Feeding jejunostomy was performed on 19 (73 per cent) and neck lymph node dissection in eight (31 per cent) patients.
The mean duration of surgery was five hours (range 3.5 to 7.5) with a mean blood loss of 840 ml (range 160 to 1800), a mean stay in ICU of 4.2 days and hospital stay ranged from nine to 84 days (mean 34). Three (11.5 per cent) patients died (pneumonia – one, congestive heart failure – one pulmonary embolus – one) in the early post-operative period. Eight (31 per cent) patients remain alive from 30 to 136 months (mean 58 months). Two (eight per cent) patients died with no evidence of disease. Thirteen (50 per cent) patients died of their disease between two to 51 months (mean 17.3 months) post-operatively. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates for one year was 65 per cent, for three years 35 per cent and for five years 26 per cent (see Figure 1). Median survival in the whole series was 18 months.
Post-operative speech was with an electrolarynx in 16 (62 per cent). One patient (four per cent) used gastric speech and one patient (four per cent) used a Blom-Singer valve effectively. Five (19 per cent) patients had no speech post-operatively. All patients maintained oral feeding. Gastric transposition constitutes a safe and reliable method of restoring the continuity of the upper digestive tract following pharyngo-laryngo-oesophagectomy.

Studies on the rhizomatous clonal sedge Carex bigelowii, at a fellfield site in subarctic Swedish Lapland examined the ecological potential of rhizomes as nitrogen uptake systems. Direct application of a solution of 15NH415NO3 to the rhizomes of C. bigelowii significantly enriched the 15N content of the plant tissue. The pattern of enrichment indicated movement of labelled nitrogen into rhizomes and adjoining tissue (including roots and shoots), showing both uptake and translocation via the rhizome system. There was a gradient of decreasing 15N enrichment with increasing distance from the point of labelling, and estimation of the total mass of nitrogen taken up via labelled rhizomes showed low levels and rates of uptake. Quantification of the size of rhizome and root systems of C. bigelowii at the study site indicates that 80% of the living biomass may be below ground, and that the surface area of the rhizome system of C. bigelowii is approx. two-thirds that of the roots. The rhizome system of C. bigelowii can therefore act as a route for nitrogen uptake, with the potential to exploit almost as great a volume of soil as the root system. This mechanism of nitrogen uptake may play an important role in the Arctic, where many species have a clonal, rhizomatous growth form. In addition, plant growth in many arctic ecosystems is limited by low soil nutrient availability, a result of low temperatures (leading to slow soil decomposition rates) and patchy resource distribution. Nitrogen uptake via rhizomes may provide plants with the capacity to take advantage of transient nutrient supplies, and may partly compensate for the cost of developing and maintaining persistent rhizome networks in ecosystems where nutrient resources are in short supply.
