Summary
Focus
The technology of flight provides immeasurable benefits for today's society: promoting global trade and commerce, providing humanitarian relief, and connecting people. In the next millennium, progressive environmental considerations will play a key role in our ability to continue to provide these benefits seamlessly. As with other transport, the consumption of petroleum-based fuels and materials draws from the Earth's finite natural resources. To move toward fully sustainable aviation, there must be a continued focus on reducing the environmental footprint over the product life cycle.
Synopsis
To ensure a balance between the social and economic benefits of aviation and the energy and environmental impacts, the aviation industry is working on improvements across the entire life cycle of its products and services. Opportunities for environmental improvement lie in advanced materials and manufacturing technologies, improved aerodynamics systems and engine efficiency, alternative fuels, increased fleet operational efficiency, and aircraft recycling.

Summary
Introduction: background of the pilot project
In the fall of 2008, a small group of librarians at the University of Houston (UH) Libraries embarked on a pilot project to develop, deploy and evaluate mobile services for library users. The overall objective of the project was to discover how mobile devices could be used to enhance the services currently provided by the library and, concurrently, to investigate mobile technology efforts at other libraries.
As demonstrated by the 2009 conference programmes for two major library associations, librarians’ interest in the use of mobile devices is increasing. At the Association of College and Research Libraries 14th National Conference, general presentations on mobile devices were offered, as well as programmes on using mobile devices to provide roving reference and serve the on-the-go mobile learner. Attendees at July's American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago learned about the WorldCat Mobile pilot project, mobile devices ‘on the road to the future’, and the public policy considerations linked to libraries’ use of mobile devices.
Around the country, librarians are experimenting with providing library services designed for mobile device users, including audio tours, text message alerts, MP3 tutorials, and mobile reference. A good summary of these and other projects can be found in Kroski (2008). The impetus for creating such new services is the clear trend toward ever greater mobile device usage among library patrons. According to the ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2008, ‘One of the most significant trends we report this year is the continuing “mobilization” of the student body’, as internet-enabled mobile phones become more and more common on campus. Likewise, the 2009 Horizon Report put ‘Mobiles’ in the category ‘Time-to-Adoption: One Year or Less’ and noted that ‘[t]he rapid pace of innovation in this arena continues to increase the potential of these little devices, challenging our ideas of how they should be used and presenting additional options with each new generation of mobiles’ (Johnson et al., 2009). Clearly, mobile services must be a priority for librarians who want to meet patrons’ needs in a rapidly changing technological environment.
Adjusting to pancreatic cancer: Perspectives from first-degree relatives

Objective:
The combination of a difficult early diagnosis, few treatment options, and high mortality rate could make the experience of pancreatic cancer different from the experience of other cancers, both for patients and families. To design effective interventions for families with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, there is need for a model of family members' adjustment to cancer that is specific to these unique aspects of pancreatic cancer.
Method:Trained clinical interviewers and a genetic counselor conducted phone interviews with 22 first-degree relatives—parents, siblings, and offspring—from a pool of participating family members. The interview transcripts were analyzed using qualitative coding methods.
Results:Participants expressed both similar and different themes compared with other literature on adjustment to cancer. Relatives struggled through both the initial diagnosis and its aftermath, seeking to balance their own strong feelings with the needs of the ailing family member. Support systems were identified as very important, regardless of the source of the support, and those without them reported more intense difficulties. Many family members felt that everything was happening too fast to slow down and process what was going on.
Significance of results:Pancreatic cancer families may be unable to cope by taking one day at a time and must find other ways of dealing with stress. Also, the compressed timeline between diagnosis and death may heighten certain coping behaviors, such as the reevaluation of one's priorities.
Towards a Family Approach in a Psychiatric Day Hospital

In a day hospital all staff members must be able to make rapid decisions, even when they cannot refer to their seniors. It is difficult to develop this capability in a teaching day hospital where the staff and student groups are constantly changing. It has, however, been facilitated by regular staff discussions with a visiting psychotherapist. In these staff groups, the study of role attributions and dynamics characteristic of families has diminished the interference caused by ‘family’ type dynamics in daily professional interaction. The paper describes the effect of such discussion in stimulating the adoption of a treatment approach which takes the family situation into account. This family approach is distinguished from family therapy, and its advantages are discussed.
