Three-millimeter-wavelength spectra of a number of nearby galaxies have been obtained at the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) using a new, very broadband receiver. This instrument, which we call the Redshift Search Receiver, has an instantaneous bandwidth of 36 GHz and operates from 74 to 110.5 GHz. The receiver has been built at UMass/FCRAO to be part of the initial instrumentation for the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) and is intended primarily for determination of the redshift of distant, dust-obscured galaxies. It is being tested on the FCRAO 14 m by measuring the 3 mm spectra of a number of nearby galaxies. There are interesting differences in the chemistry of these galaxies.

On 4 July 2005 at 5:52 UT the Deep Impact mission successfully completed its goal to hit the nucleus of 9P/Tempel 1 with an impactor, forming a crater on the nucleus and ejecting material into the coma of the comet (A'Hearn et al. 2005). The 370 kg impactor collided with the sunlit side of the nucleus with a relative velocity of 10.2 km s$^{-1}$. NASA's Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) observed the $1_{10}-1_{01}$ ortho-water ground-state rotational transition in comet 9P/Tempel 1 before, during, and after the impact. No excess emission from the impact was detected by SWAS. However, the water production rate of the comet showed large natural variations of more than a factor of three during the weeks before the impact.

Summary
Abstract The observational evidence for the presence of discs around protostars and young stars consists of spectral and polarimetric data from which the existence of circum-stellar discs are indirectly inferred and data in which discs are directly imaged. A review of both the direct and indirect evidence for discs is presented as well as summary of the properties of these discs and their relationship to bipolar outflows and stellar jets.
Introduction
This review of discs associated with protostars and young stars stars is limited to two types of young stellar objects (YSOs): infrared sources (objects that emit only at infrared wavelengths) and optically visible T Tauri and FU Orionis stars. Current star formation models suggest that discs should commonly be associated with protostars and young stars. In fact, the flattened nature of our Solar system provides strong circumstantial evidence that discs have played a role in the formation of at least one star and planetary system.
Interest in circum-stellar discs has been heightened by the recent discovery of bipolar molecular outflows and stellar jets associated with many YSOs. An attractive model for the collimation and generation of energetic outflows assumes that accretion of material onto a young star through a viscous disc ultimately powers this energetic phenomenon. Unfortunately, direct imaging of these discs has proven difficult and only a few circumstellar discs have been unambiguously detected. Instead the efforts to detect circumstellar discs have frequently uncovered evidence for much larger structures, often called “interstellar discs”, surrounding YSOs.

The development of millimeter and submillimeter spectroscopy has allowed astronomers to probe the cold, dense component of the interstellar medium. This medium, primarily composed of gas in molecular form, is gravitationally bound into relatively distinct clouds that are sites of star formation within our Galaxy. The most ubiquitous tracers of these molecular clouds are the rotational transitions of carbon monoxide. Observations of CO emission have been commonly used to estimate the size, temperature, mass, and density of molecular clouds; in addition, the spectral line profiles can be used to study the internal dynamics of these clouds. Although the sound speed within molecular clouds is only about 0.2 km s−1, observed CO line widths are more typically 1 to 5 km s−1. Thus, the internal dynamics of molecular clouds are characterized by supersonic gas motions whose nature is poorly understood.

A wealth of data is now available on the energetic mass outflows that are associated with young stellar objects. This phenomenon is thought to occur at a very early stage in the evolution of stars of almost all masses. The discovery of this energetic event was first made through observations of the rapidly expanding molecular gas that surrounds many of these young stellar objects. A review of the physical properties, including the energetics and morphology, of the expanding molecular gas is presented in this paper. In addition, the role these energetic winds play in affecting the dynamics of the parental molecular clouds is also discussed. Finally, the results of detailed studies of the structure and kinematics of the high velocity molecular gas are reviewed and the evidence for existance of wind-swept cavities and molecular shells within the clouds are presented.

We have detected 9 of the rotational fine structure lines of the 2-0 Phillips band of interstellar C2 toward ζ Persei using the Tull spectrograph and Reticon detector on the 2.7 m telescope at the McDonald Observatory. These data yield a total C2 column density of 1.2 × 1013 cm-2 and a rotational temperature of 97 K compared to 1.4 × 1013 cm-2 and 45 K predicted by the detailed model of the cloud by Black, Hartquist and Dalgarno. We suggest that radiative pumping through the Mulliken and Phillips systems has modified the C2 level populations in such a way as to produce an observed rotational temperature which exceeds that arising in pure thermal equilibrium.
