This study explored factors that influence academic achievement and hence, future career prospects. The relationships between the factors, academic trait boredom, approach to learning and academic achievement were examined using data collected from university students at a small English university and from their student records. The initial statistical analysis revealed significant effects of gender on learning approach and two of the three academic trait boredom subscales. Female students proved to be less prone to academic trait boredom than their male counterparts. A model was then developed that showed how a student’s choice of learning approach was influenced by academic trait boredom and impinged on academic achievement. This modelling also confirmed that students who are more prone to academic trait boredom are also more likely to adopt a surface approach to learning rather than a deep or strategic one. The results of this investigation have implications for students, lecturers, course designers and learning support staff both here in this one location as well as elsewhere across the higher education sector.

Background
Singapore, albeit a small country, has one of the highest lightning activities in the world. However, injuries related to this spectacular weather phenomenon are under-reported and rarely a subject of study. Most reported cases dealt with lightning-caused fatalities but lightning-caused accidents are not always fatal. Actual reported international data showed that about 80% of lightning victims survived, with or without after effects. This study reviewed the cases of lightning-related injuries who presented to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Emergency department.
MethodsThis is a case series of 5 patients. All 5 patients presented to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Emergency Department after a thunderstorm. All were undergoing military training when the incident happened. The circumstances surrounding their injury and their presentation and symptomatology were reviewed.
ResultsIn our study, three possible mechanisms of injury were identified through a side flash which occurred when the lightning hit the tree and traveled partly down that tree before a portion jumped to the nearby victims; through the concussive effect of the shock waves produced by the lightning; and through step voltage mechanism wherein the lightning after hitting the tree traveled into the ground where victims were standing. Two patients were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, one suffered from sensory-neural hearing loss, and one patient had a mild conjunctivitis as a result of tissue inflammation. Other symptoms included retrograde amnesia, parasthesia, tinnitus, and a single episode of seizure which resolved spontaneously. All our patients survived the ordeal and were discharged well back to their premorbid states.
ConclusionThis paper supports existing evidence that lightning-caused accidents are not always fatal and that victims may survive with no or little side effects given proper medical treatment.

Observational and telemetry data were used in a geographic information system database to document the ontogenetic development of sexually dimorphic patterns of space use among free-living spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta in Kenya. No measures of space use were sexually dimorphic among den-dwelling cubs, nor were sex differences apparent among hyenas that had ceased using dens for shelter until these animals were c. 30 months of age. Significant sex differences emerged late in the third year of life, and persisted throughout the remainder of the life span; males were found farther from the geographic centre of the natal territory than were females, and the mean size of individual 95% utility distributions was larger for males than females. Most dispersal events by radio-collared males were preceded by a series of exploratory excursions outside the natal territory. All collared males dispersed, but no collared females did so. Most dispersing males moved only one or two home ranges away at dispersal, roughly 8–10 km distant from the natal territory, before settling in a new social group.
The effect of nutrition on fibre characteristics and production in the alpaca

In single-coated animal species selected for fibre production, such as sheep and Angora goats, nutrition is known to have a positive effect on fibre length and diameter, and hence on the weight of fibre produced, while in double-coated species, such as the cashmere goat, the fibre characteristics of the undercoat appear relatively insensitive to nutritional influence. Recent studies on the relationship between nutrition and fibre production in the llama, a double-coated species, indicate that it conforms to the above generalisation in that the growth rate and diameter of its fibre are not amenable to nutritional manipulation (Russel and Redden, 1994). There is a lack of information on the effects of nutrition on fibre characteristics and production in the other domesticated species of South American camelid, the single-coated alpaca. The experiment reported here was designed to provide such information.
