Summary
Identical and fraternal twin pairs reared together have been key to understanding the genetic and environmental etiology of dyslexia and of individual differences in reading. In this chapter, we begin with a brief overview of the methods of twin research, and the historical development and application of these methods to understanding the etiology of individual differences and deficits in reading and related skills. Then we examine results from predominantly English-language twin research on dyslexia. The next section on twin studies of individual differences in reading ability introduces a broader cross-language perspective that includes comparisons of findings from studies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and China. Then we expand the reading phenotype beyond word recognition to reading comprehension, the ultimate goal of reading.

In this article we report on reading ability of twin children in kindergarten to Grade 2 as a function of whether members of the pairs are assigned to the same or different classrooms. All analyses were run using mixed model regressions to account for the interdependence between twin pairs. The samples, total N = 1505, are from Australia and the United States. We found a close-to-significant difference in favor of same-class children in kindergarten and Grade 1. However, when results were adjusted to take account of pre-existing differences in disruptive behavior and in preliteracy ability, the class assignment effects disappeared. We suggest that these pre-existing differences, particularly disruptive behavior, are influencing decisions about whether to separate twins or not and also affecting early reading performance, a conclusion supported by significant correlations between the behavioral measures, preliteracy, and school-based reading. We conclude that, on average, early literacy in twins is not directly affected by their assignment to the same or different classrooms.

This study describes the operation of an in-home alarm system in seven Swedish municipalities. Statistics on the diffusion of this technology, its costs, and the characteristics of its use are reported. Alarms were triggered by 60% of the users. Mean annual costs per recipient varied from SEK 1,985 to SEK 8,215, mainly reflecting different patterns of use.

ULSI packing density calls for sub-micron line widths, but on n-type polysilicon this can lead to incomplete titanium silicide C49 to C54 phase transformation after a conventional two step rapid thermal anneal (RTA). This study compares three different ion beam amorphization techniques: preamorphization, ion beam mixing and silicide amorphization, aiming at a complete phase transformation for submicron silicide lines. For preamorphization, an arsenic implantation at moderate energies (35–75 keV) was used to amorphize the top layer of the polysilicon prior to the titanium deposition. Ion beam mixing used a high-energy (200 keV) arsenic implantation after the titanium deposition to create an amorphous mix of silicon and titanium. These two methods did, each by themselves, lead to an increased fraction of C54 silicide grains already during the low temperature RTA, and a complete phase transformation during the subsequent high temperature RTA. Both methods lowered the thickness difference between titanium silicide on p- and n-type silicon. Silicide amorphization with 75 keV arsenic or 100 keV antimony, applied before the second RTA, did not significantly improve the silicide phase transformation.
