Summary
INTRODUCTION
The high profile of names and naming systems (“onomastics”) is a distinctive hallmark of the ethnographic literature on lowland South America. Names were typically excluded from anthropological research on kinship – witness textbooks on the subject – but when it came to the complex social structures of the Gê and Bororo or the Kariera-like section systems of the Panoans, relations predicated on the transfer of names turned out to be of crucial significance. Following pioneering work on these groups, most monographs on lowland Amerindians now include a section on onomastics and some are entirely devoted to the topic.
In an influential comparative survey, Viveiros de Castro has suggested that Amerindian naming systems can be ranged along a continuum from the “exonymic” to the “endonymic.” In the exonymic systems of the Ikpeng and Yanomamö or the Araweté and other Tupi-speaking groups, names come from without and from others: the gods, the dead, enemies, or animals. In the endonymic systems of the Gê-speaking Kayapó and Timbira, names are conserved as heirlooms within the group, make up part of its corporate property and identity, and designate particular social relations. Furthermore, for the exonymic Tupinambá, the emphasis was on the individual, heroic acquisition of singular and never-to-be-repeated names, which set the bearer apart while, for the endonymic Kayapó, the emphasis is on collectively sanctioned and ceremonialized inter-vivos transmission that keeps a limited stock of names in perpetual circulation.

The domestic unit is inseparable from its homestead, and the 'house', at once a physical place and a social unit, is often also a unit of production and consumption, a cult group, and even a political faction. Inspired by Lévi-Strauss's suggestion that the multi-functional noble houses of medieval Europe were simply the best-known examples of a widespread social institution, the contributors to this collection analyse 'house' systems in Southeast Asia and South America, exploring the interrelationships between buildings, people, and ideas. They reveal some of the ways in which houses can stand for social groups and serve as images of process and order.

Summary
House images move in two directions: they are in us as much as we are in them.
(Gaston Bachelard 1964: xxxiii)The essays in this collection are concerned with houses, but not simply with houses as physical structures. They focus instead on the interrelations between buildings, people and ideas, using ethnographic case studies to reveal some of the different ways in which houses come to stand for social groups and represent the world around them. Places in which the to and fro of life unfolds, built, modified, moved or abandoned in accord with the changing circumstances of their inhabitants, houses have dynamic, processual characteristics encapsulated in the word ‘dwelling’. These characteristics, shared by buildings and the groups and categories they represent, are also reflected in the chapters that follow.
Inspired by Lévi-Strauss's writings on ‘house societies’ and based on a workshop held in Cambridge in the spring of 1990, our book has two interconnected aims. We take a sympathetic but critical look at Lévi-Strauss's ideas of the house as a specific form of social organization, testing its utility against empirical cases drawn from Southeast Asia and lowland South America. Forms of social organization in these two areas show both striking parallels and marked contrasts and each has a key role in Lévi-Strauss's studies of kinship, South America representing the earliest phase and Southeast Asia the most recent.

Summary
In recent years it has become increasingly evident that the small, fragmented tribes of Amazonian ethnography, twin products of colonial genocide and academic classificatory ethnogenesis, are poor guides for understanding an area once integrated by complex regional systems. If anthropologists have long recognized a fundamental unity beneath the manifest linguistic and cultural diversity of Amazonia, progress towards synthesis has been relatively slow. In studies of kinship, progress has often been hampered by the use of outmoded and alien theoretical models which delimit an artificially narrow field of study and square uneasily with local idioms.
Although there are a number of publications on architectural and spatial symbolism in different parts of lowland South America, many treat architecture as a sphere of analysis relatively independent from kinship and social structure. In this chapter I want to extend previous explorations of the significance of Northwest Amazonian architecture in a new direction by suggesting that their communal longhouses provide the eastern Tukanoan-speaking peoples with a way of conceptualizing their own social structure, one which is misrepresented and distorted when translated as unilineal descent. At the same time, I shall examine whether such native idioms are usefully included under Lévi-Strauss's (1983a, 1987) general rubric of ‘house societies’.
My argument can be summarized as follows. Tukanoan social structure has typically been characterized in terms of patrilineal descent, virilocal residence, symmetric alliance, and a Dravidian relationship terminology, and described as an open-ended social system made up of a number of intermarrying exogamous language groups each internally divided into sets of ranked clans.

Summary
Central to capitalism is a vision of man's limitless needs, needs which lead to his increasing mastery of nature and which propel him onwards and upwards in a spiral of progress. In contemporary Amazonia, and with such progress in mind, missionaries, merchants and government officials vie with each other to bring the material and moral benefits of civilisation to Amerindians. Each mission combines church with store, and even the cocaine-dealers claim a civilising mission as they barter coca leaves for coca-cola.
Long ago, in his Second Discourse on Inequality, and possibly with these same Amerindians in mind, Rousseau questioned this optimistic view of progress and rewrote its history as a tragedy:
This new condition, with its solitary and simple life, very limited in its needs, and very few instruments invented to supply them, left men to enjoy a great deal of leisure, which they used to procure many sorts of commodities unknown to their fathers; and this was the first yoke they imposed upon themselves, without thinking about it, and the first source of the evils they prepared for their descendants. For not only did such commodities continue to soften both body and mind, they almost lost through habitual use their power to please, and as they had at the same time degenerated into actual needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than the possession of them was sweet; and people were unhappy in losing them without being happy in possessing them.
(1984: 113)
