Intrauterine factors important for cognitive development, such as birth weight, chorionicity and umbilical cord characteristics were investigated. A total of 663 twin pairs completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised and scores were available for Performance, Verbal and Total Intelligence Quotient (IQ). The intrauterine factors examined were birth weight, placental weight and morphology, cord knots, cord length and cord insertion. IQ scores for the varying levels of the intrauterine markers adjusting for gender and gestational age were calculated. The heritability of IQ and the association between IQ and intrauterine environment were examined. Twins with lower birth weight and cord knots had lower IQ scores. The aetiology of IQ is largely distinct from that of birth weight and cord knots, and non-shared environment may influence the observed relationships.

A new method of extracting free-living arthropods and molluscs from rough, matted grassland has been developed which gives extraction rates that are usually above 95 per cent. Its advantages over other known methods, especially sweeping, are that it is less liable to personal error, collects from otherwise inaccessible places in the habitat, permits selection of places within the habitat (e.g., tops and bases of grass) and does not depend on removal of parts of the habitat.
The apparatus consists of a light, portable but powerful electric suction pump of standard pattern, with a special compartment, containing a small collecting bag, fitted between the fan intake and the flexible hose that carries a nozzle 1 in. in diameter, which is inserted into the grass. It can be operated on several hundred yards of cable.
The sample obtained comprises a mass of plant matter and detritus from which the animals are easily sorted by hand in the laboratory.
The method is unsuitable for subterranean arthropods or for insects living inside or otherwise firmly attached to plants. But it should be possible to use it for a variety of habitats other than grassland.

Recent taxonomic studies have recognised that Lygus pratensis (L.) consists of several species and other workers have shown that the Tarnished Plant Bug of N. America is L. lineolaris (P. de B.), a species confined to that continent. Although it is impossible to be certain what species is referred to in all of the earlier works on biology and pest incidence of L. pratensis in the Palaearctic region, evidence is given which shows that L. rugulipennis Popp. is the more important pest in this region and it is to this species that the name European Tarnished Plant Bug should be applied. Observations on the life-cycle of L. rugulipennis in England have been carried out and they show that there are normally two generations per year; the second generation becomes adult in the autumn and overwinters in this stage, egg-laying occurring the following spring. This agrees in general with that previously described for L. pratensis, sens. lat.

Dissections of over 93,000 grass stems obtained by random core-sampling of natural grasslands at a site in Berkshire largely confirm earlier conclusions regarding the associations of different species of dipterous stem borers and grasses. Allowing for the number of stems of each grass species per unit area, the densities of larvae were greatest in Anthoxanum odoratum, Poa and Lolium and lowest in Dactylis glomerata. Oscinella frit (L.) was less abundant than Cetema spp. and Opomyza germinationis (L.); it was not found in D. glomerata but was most abundant in Lolium and Festuca. Sampling showed that overwintering larvae of O. frit suffer at least 50 per cent, mortality between September–December and January–March.
Previous studies have largely concentrated on populations in different species of grasses, but it is advantageous to consider the production of O. frit in terms of short (grazed or regularly mown) grasslands and long grasslands (hay fields, uncut commons and rough grazing); comparisons of figures obtained by core-sampling for larvae and emergence traps for adults indicate a production from short grassland and long grassland of about 11 and under 1 overwintered adult per sq. yd., respectively. Having regard to the greater productivity of common leys, dominated by Lolium and Poa, a national average for the first figure would be 15. There is little increase from generation to generation in grassland populations during the year, in contrast with the situation in oats.
From tentative estimates of the acreages and productivities of the different sources of O. frit in England and Wales as a whole, it is clear that the majority of the adults of O. frit are produced by grasslands in the spring and summer and by the oat panicles in the autumn, the latter population being much the greater. As O. frit is a migratory insect, such a conclusion is especially significant and indicates that during the autumn the ‘ population pressure ’ in the grasslands will be very different to that during other seasons.

Earlier types of suction sampling apparatus, driven by electric or petrol motors, are briefly reviewed and their disadvantages for work in remote areas indicated. To overcome these a cheap, simple, hand-operated model has been developed and the construction of this is described. However, unlike some of the motorised models, it does not extract all the fauna from the area sampled.
