As is now generally agreed, so-called ‘authentic’ performances of baroque music are modern in conception and sound. The point was argued convincingly during the 1980s by Laurence Dreyfus, Richard Taruskin and others (Dreyfus, ‘Early Music Defended against Its Devotees: A Theory of Historical Performance in the Twentieth Century’, The Musical Quarterly 69/3 (1983), 297–322; Taruskin, Daniel Leech-Wilkinson, Nicholas Temperley and Robert Winter, ‘The Limits of Authenticity: A Discussion’, Early Music 12/1 (1984), 3–25; Nicholas Kenyon, ed., Authenticity and Early Music: A Symposium (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1988)). Radically separated from nineteenth-century performance traditions, the reconstructed ‘old’ sound was exciting and new, and, for me at least, there have been occasions when these ‘authentic’ performances have been revelatory, shedding light on music I thought I knew (although, to be fully confessional in terms of the era in which it all began, I also loved the Swingle Singers and Wendy (Walter) Carlos's Switched-On Bach).

Early in 1719 plans were advanced for establishing a company by the name of the Royal Academy of Music for the purpose of performing ‘Operas on the English Theatre, in greater perfection than they have hitherto been represented, either in this or any other Country’. In May George I ordered the organizers to ‘prepare a Bill for Our Royal Signature’ to incorporate the Academy by letters patents, and he granted the company £1,000 a year for seven years. The official royal charter establishing the Academy for twenty-one years is dated 27 July 1719. In addition to the Governor of the company (always to be the Lord Chamberlain), the original fourteen directors of the company can be identified from the minutes of the first meetings in November and December. By the time the Academy produced its first opera, Giovanni Porta's Numitore (2 April 1720), the composition of the board of directors had shifted (as indicated in the printed libretto), and seven were new. One of these was John Percival, later 1st Earl of Egmont.

Summary
When George Frideric Handel arrived in London in 1710, he entered a flourishing musical culture. The landed aristocracy, gentry, and increasingly well-to-do merchant classes were schooled in music, and many were able performers and composers. Consorts of gentlemen musicians, often with professionals mixed in, were numerous—especially, but not exclusively, in urban areas. Some of these musical groups accrued wide recognition, and their performances were accorded specific nights of the week. John Hawkins writes that around 1720 “there were weekly concerts at the houses of the duke of Rutland, the earls of Burlington and Essex, lord Percival, father of the late earl of Egmont, and others of the nobility.” This active musical scene created a robust need for practical musical scores. Printed music was routinely sought from London dealers and brought home from European travels. No quantity of printed music, however, could replace the need for manuscript copies, not just in terms of performance, but also for instruction and archiving: commonplace books (blank volumes into which music, poetry, or factual information was collected) and composers' archives of their own music were necessarily in manuscript. Instrumental parts for both professional performance and much amateur music-making were often hand-written, as well. Throughout the first half of the eighteenth century, the distribution of printed music and manuscript music existed side by side, as witnessed in catalogues, inventories, and correspondence.

Summary
The French author Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle is said to have asked disparagingly about Italian instrumental chamber music: ‘Sonate, que me veux-tu?’ Today we might ask the same question of the Italian chamber cantata: ‘What good are you?’ For years, little musical importance was attached to this pervasive Baroque form, even in the hands of a composer such as George Frideric Handel. As Reinhard Strohm wrote about Handel’s cantatas in 1985: ‘Although very many of these are works of extraordinary beauty, they are among the least-known of Handel’s compositions.’ Even after valuable archival work added significantly to our knowledge about their chronology and context, Handel’s cantatas continued to be lumped together by most biographers as early compositions with relatively uninteresting texts, typically depicting the trials of a lovelorn shepherd and ‘couched in a fashionable pastoral convention’. With a few familiar exceptions (such as La Lucrezia and Agrippina condotta a morire) they tended to be summarily passed over on the way to what has been considered Handel’s ‘genuine’ (and much more substantive) musical contributions of opera, oratorio, anthem, suite and concerto.
I have always felt differently. While marvelling at their musical richness, I also became increasingly convinced of their importance to Handel’s life and musical development, or, as Strohm put it, that ‘the hundred and more cantatas da camera which Handel wrote in Italy are a kind of musical diary’. Their compositional history paints a distinctive picture of private music patronage, one that is very different from the public arena that quickly absorbed Handel after his arrival in London. The texts, behind a pastoral facade, embody a deeply emotional utterance resonant of personal, political and religious issues, while the music reveals a composer who has already reached the first bloom of maturity both in the musical penetration of his texts and in the development of stylistic features that distinguish his most advanced works.
