The angular diameters ad shapes of bright infrared stars are now being measured from 2 micron to 20 microns using several newly developed techniques of high angular resolution interferometry. These objects possess circumstellar shells emitting in the temperature range 300-600K, thus the brightest of their number have sizes ranging from 0 1 to 10 arcseconds, and are readily resolved by instruments a few meters across.
The size, shape, and structure of several typesof stars will be discussed in detail as the Colloquium proceeds. It will be seen that this information can be used to help characterize the optical properties of the particulate material contained in the circumstellar envelopes. Conclusions concerning the formation and evolution of these cold outer regions of stars may also be possible It appears that the conditions in some of these circumstellar envelopes may be suitable for the formation of planets, a process which may be studied directly as these new techniques are further developed.
Although sensitivities of present instruments are still somewhat marginal, it is now possible to resolve the brightest of the extragalactic nuclei at 10 microns Future instrumental developments should bring the size and structure of many extragalactic nuclei within reach at several wavelengths, thus adding important information on the nature of these extraordinary sources of infrared emission

By adapting the principles of interferometry first developed by Michelson, we have built a simple incoherent interferometer which operates efficiently from 2 to 20 microns
The design and performance of this instrument will be discussed More than 12 stars have been at least partially resolved at one or more wavelengths and, in several cases, their sizes and shapes have been determined A number of objects in the solar system have also been studied and useful studies of extragalactic nuclei are now possible. With the development of the new Multiple Mirror Telescope both the resolution and the sensitivity of this instrument will soon be extended.

The Earth’s atmosphere transmits infrared radiation through a number of windows. Table 1 lists the seven photometric systems in use at the University of Arizona which are chosen to fit the windows between 1·0 and 25 microns. An absolute calibration (Johnson, 1965; Low, 1966) has been worked out for each wavelength band and, for reference, we include an estimate of our current limiting magnitudes using a 60-inch telescope. At about 1000 microns, observations from the ground are again possible and both our group and workers in Russia (Fedoseev 1963) and England (Baldock et al., 1965) have succeeded in making observations of celestial sources. Between 25 and 1000 microns a few data have now been obtained from stratospheric altitudes by observers using jet aircraft (Low and Gillespie, 1968) and helium-filled balloons (Hoffman et al., 1967). We can anticipate that activity of this sort will increase greatly in the near future. At present, however, most of what we know concerning the nature of celestial objects at infrared wavelengths was obtained with ground-based instruments.
