The crystal structure of parkinsonite, nominally Pb7MoO9Cl2: a naturally occurring Aurivillius phase

The crystal structure of the sheet oxychloride mineral parkinsonite, nominally Pb7MoO9Cl2, has been determined for synthetic and natural crystals of analysed compositions, (Pb7.28Mo0.72) O8.96Cl1.96 and (Pb7.23Mo0.40V0.37)O8.90Cl1.82, respectively. Parkinsonite is tetragonal, space group I4/mmm. Unit-cell parameters for synthetic and natural crystals are: asynthetic = 3.9773(4) Å, csynthetic = 22.718(4) Å, Vsynthetic = 359.38(5) Å3, and anatural = 3.9570(3) Å, cnatural = 22.634(5) Å, Vnatural = 354.40(5) Å3. Final agreement indices (R1, wR2) for refinements of the two crystals are 0.024, 0.067 (synthetic) and 0.036, 0.078 (natural). Although a superlattice has been identified by electron diffraction for crystals of both samples (Welch et al., 1996), only the substructure could be determined by X-ray diffraction. This X-ray invisibility of the superstructure has also been observed for the closely related sheet oxychlorides asisite and schwartzembergite, for both of which superstructure motifs have been identified by electron diffraction. The Pb(1) site of both parkinsonite crystals is fully occupied by Pb. Refinement of the Pb content of the Pb(2) site for the synthetic and natural crystals gives occupancies of 0.85(1) and 0.70(1) respectively, corresponding to 3.40 and 2.80 Pb(2) a.p.f.u. respectively. The substituent cation Mo (synthetic crystal) and [Mo+V] (natural crystal) was located at a distance of 0.5 Å from Pb(2), being displaced along the fourfold axis. The reduced occupancy of Pb(2) is due to substitution by Mo or [Mo+V]. No evidence for separate Mo and V sites in the substructure of natural parkinsonite was found. Refined occupancies of the Cl site are 0.84(4) and 0.91(5) for the synthetic and natural crystals, respectively, and are consistent with the 9:1 superstructure component identified by electron diffraction.
Compressibility of β-As4S4: an in situ high-pressure single-crystal X-ray study

Ambient temperature X-ray diffraction data were collected at different pressures from two crystals of β-As4S4, which were made by heating realgar under vacuum at 295ºC for 24 h. These data were used to calculate the unit-cell parameters at pressures up to 6.86 GPa. Above 2.86 GPa, it was only possible to make an approximate measurement of the unit-cell parameters. As expected for a crystal structure that contains molecular units held together by weak van der Waals interactions, β-As4S4 has an exceptionally high compressibility. The compressibility data were fitted to a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state with a resulting volume V0 = 808.2(2) Å3, bulk modulus K0 = 10.9(2) GPa and K' = 8.9(3). These values are extremely close to those reported for the low-temperature polymorph of As4S4, realgar, which contains the same As4S4 cage-molecule. Structural analysis showed that the unit-cell contraction is due mainly to the reduction in intermolecular distances, which causes a substantial reduction in the unit-cell volume (∼21% at 6.86 GPa). The cage-like As4S4 molecules are only slightly affected. No phase transitions occur in the pressure range investigated.
Micro-Raman spectra, collected across the entire pressure range, show that the peaks associated with As–As stretching have the greatest pressure dependence; the S–As–S bending frequency and the As–S stretching have a much weaker dependence or no variation at all as the pressure increases; this is in excellent agreement with the structural data.
A multimethodic approach for the characterization of manganiceladonite, a new member of the celadonite family from Cerchiara mine, Eastern Liguria, Italy

In the manganesiferous ores associated with the metacherts of the ophiolitic sequences at the Cerchiara mine, Eastern Liguria (Italy), a new Mn-bearing mineral belonging to the mica group has been recently found and characterized. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction tomography studies confirm that the mineral belongs to the mica group. Unit-cell parameters from the powder diffraction pattern are: a = 5.149(1), b = 8.915(1), c = 10.304(1) Å, β = 102.03(1)°, space group C2 or C2/m. On the basis of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic results, the Mn4+ content represents a very subordinate fraction of the total Mn, the remaining occurring as Mn3+. The Raman spectrum clearly indicates the presence of OH groups in the structure. Laser-ablation inductively-coupled-plasma mass-spectrometry measurements assess the presence of considerable amounts of Li.
Assuming all Mn as Mn3+ and 22 negative charges, the empirical formula can be expressed as: (K0.83□0.17)(Mn1.143+Mg0.80Li0.20Fe0.023+)(Si3.89Al0.10)O10[(OH)1.92F0.08] with the sum of the octahedral cations indicating a 'transitional' character between a di- and a tri-octahedral structure. This formula corresponds ideally to the Mn3+ analogue of celadonite, thus expanding the range of solid solution in the celadonite family. The ideal end-member formula KMn3+MgSi4O10(OH)2 can be easily related to celadonite by the homovalent substitution VIMn3+ → VIFe3+. The mineral and its name have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association, (IMA 2015-052).
