Background
A dysfunctional network of prefrontal and (para-)limbic brain region has been suggested to underlie emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Abnormal activity in this network may be due to structural alterations in white-matter tracts connecting prefrontal and (para-)limbic brain regions. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the structural integrity of major white-matter tracts connecting these regions in BPD.
MethodUsing diffusion tensor imaging, we investigated fractional anisotropy (FA), axonal anisotropy (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD) in the uncinate fasciculus, the major white-matter tract connecting (para-)limbic and prefrontal brain regions, in 26 healthy controls (HC) and 26 BPD participants. To clarify the specificity of possible white-matter alterations among HC and BPD participants, FA, AD and RD were also investigated in the cingulum.
ResultsWe found distinct structural alterations in the uncinate fasciculus but not in the cingulum of BPD participants. Compared to HC participants, BPD participants showed lower FA and higher RD in the uncinate fasciculus. By contrast, AD did not differ in the uncinate fasciculus of HC and BPD participants.
ConclusionsOur finding of abnormal FA and RD in the uncinate fasciculus indicates distinct white-matter alterations in BPD, presumably due to stress-induced myelin degeneration in the aftermath of stressful life events. Although these alterations may account for abnormal activity in brain regions implicated in emotion dysregulation, such as the amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex and prefrontal cortex, it remains to be determined whether these alterations are specific for BPD.

We have used high-resolution, HST WFC3/IR, near-infrared imaging to conduct a detailed bulge-disk decomposition of the morphologies of ≃ 200 of the most massive (M* > 1011 M⊙) galaxies at 1 < z < 3 in the CANDELS-UDS field. We find that, while such massive galaxies at low redshift are generally bulge-dominated, at redshifts 1<z<2 they are predominantly mixed bulge+disk systems, and by z > 2 they are mostly disk-dominated. Interestingly, we find that while most of the quiescent galaxies are bulge-dominated, a significant fraction (25–40%) of the most quiescent galaxies, have disk-dominated morphologies. Thus, our results suggest that the physical mechanisms which quench star-formation activity are not simply connected to those responsible for the morphological transformation of massive galaxies.

Operation “Hazen” was an IGY expedition, organized by the Canadian Defence Research Board to carry out scientific studies in the Lake Hazen area of northern Ellesmere Island, from April 1957 to August 1959. From April to August 1957, a party of six carried out glaciological, glacial-meteorological, seismic, and survey studies on Gilman Glacier, and two geologists worked out from Hazen Camp, the main station on Lake Hazen. From August 1957 to April 1958, a party of four meteorologists wintered at the base camp. The third phase, from April to August 1958, involved a continuation of the 1957 studies on Gilman Glacier, an extension of these studies to the ice cap to the north of Lake Hazen, and a co-ordinated study of the Lake Hazen basin and of other parts of northern Ellesmere Island. The latter included meteorological, geological, limnological, geomorphological, botanical, zoological and archaeological work by twelve members of the expedition stationed at the base camp. In the summer of 1959, a limited programme of glaciological, meteorological and botanical research was conducted by a small party on Gilman Glacier. During the spring and autumn re-supply operations, the expedition received support and co-operation from the Royal Canadian Air Force, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Navy, the United States Air Force, and (for a week in 1958) from a “Supercub” aircraft flown by Dr Terris Moore of Waterville, Maine.

The understanding of ice, especially of sea ice, is basic to Canada's defence and economic development and yet, up to 1956, little had been done in Canada to study the formation, development and degeneration of sea ice. The National Research Council had been engaged in ice studies, but the emphasis here had been on fresh-water ice. Glaciological studies had been carried out by several universities, by the Geophysics Section of the Defence Research Board, and by other government departments.

Increased amino acid content in high-oil maize (Zea mays L.) grain may add further value to its use in livestock rations, especially if this enhanced amino acid content is consistent across varying growing conditions. Most high-oil maize (HOM) grown in the USA utilizes the TopCross system which involves planting a blend (TC Blend) of two types of maize. Field experiments and on-farm studies were conducted in 1997 and 1998 to compare the amino acid profile of grain from HOM TC Blends with that of their normal-oil maize (NOM) counterparts across a range of production environments in Ohio. In 1997, the composition of four amino acids (lysine, methionine, glycine and arginine) was significantly higher in HOM compared to NOM grain. In 1998, nine amino acids (lysine, methionine, glycine, arginine, asparagine, threonine, serine, cysteine and tryptophan) were greater in HOM than in NOM grain. Lysine and methionine content in HOM grain averaged 12 and 13% higher than in NOM grain in both years. The number of amino acids significantly affected by the grain parent was greater than that for maize type each year. A significant maize type × grain parent interaction for a limited number of amino acids suggest that TC Blend grain parents may affect the consistency of amino acid composition in HOM grain. Results of this study demonstrate that the levels of several amino acids, including economically important lysine and methionine, were consistently greater in HOM than in NOM grain across a range of production environments. Modelling with livestock ration balancing software showed that the additional amino acids and oil in HOM added 12–20% to its value as livestock feed.
