The study of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) is a young and promising field of research. If IMBH exist, they could explain the rapid growth of supermassive black holes by acting as seeds in the early stage of galaxy formation. Formed by runaway collisions of massive stars in young and dense stellar clusters, intermediate-mass black holes could still be present in the centers of globular clusters, today. We measured the inner kinematic profiles with integral-field spectroscopy for 10 Galactic globular cluster and determined masses or upper limits of central black holes. In combination with literature data we further studied the positions of our results on known black-hole scaling relations (such as M• − σ) and found a similar but flatter correlation for IMBHs. Applying cluster evolution codes, the change in the slope could be explained with the stellar mass loss occurring in clusters in a tidal field over its life time. Furthermore, we present results from several numerical simulations on the topic of IMBHs and integral field units (IFUs). N-body simulations were used to simulate IFU data cubes. For the specific case of NGC 6388 we simulated two different IFU techniques and found that velocity dispersion measurements from individual velocities are strongly biased towards lower values due to blends of neighbouring stars and background light. In addition, we use the Astrophysical Multipurpose Software Environment (AMUSE) to combine gravitational physics, stellar evolution and hydrodynamics to simulate the accretion of stellar winds onto a black hole. We find that the S-stars need to provide very strong winds in order to explain the accretion rate in the galactic center.

We present a Gemini/GMOS program to measure spectroscopic metallicities and ages of globular clusters (GCs) and nuclei in dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters. Preliminary results indicate that the globular clusters are old and metal-poor, very similar to the GCs in the Milky Way halo. The nuclei tend to be more metal-rich than the globular clusters but more metal-poor and older, on average, than the stars in the bodies of the galaxies. The [α/Fe] ratio appears to be solar for the GCs, nuclei, and dEs, but the uncertainties do not exclude some globular clusters from being enhanced in alpha elements.

Do LSB galaxies have globular clusters? If they do, how do the main features of these systems compare to the ones observed in other galaxies? What are the implications of these findings on the formation of the halo and the star formation history of LSB galaxies? These are the questions we are looking to address with this study.

We present preliminary results of an ACS/HST survey for globular clusters on massive LSB galaxies.

Setting constraints on the evolutionary history of a galaxy requires informations about the age and metallicity of its stellar content. However, outside the Local Group of galaxies representative surveys on the age and metallicity of stellar populations in galaxies of different types (e.g. luminosity, environment) can only be performed with photometry. The latter requires special care in order to overcome the age- metallicity degeneracy of broad band colors. Combining optical and near-infrared observations of globular clusters is a powerful tool in this respect, using the different sensitivity of broad band colors regarding both parameters. Based on Single Stellar Population (SSP) models we derive the cumulative age distribution for various globular cluster systems and compare it to simulated systems with a known age distribution. So far this method has been tested successfully on various early-type galaxies, revealing a second generation of globular clusters in two galaxies in a sample of eight with convincing reliability.

We have measured the dynamical mass of the highly luminous star cluster W3 in the young merger remnant galaxy NGC 7252. The value is Mdyn = (8 ± 2) × 107M⊙, and represents the highest dynamically-confirmed mass for an extra-galactic star cluster so far. The dynamical mass is in excellent agreement with the luminous mass (Maraston et al. 2001). This results from the use of stellar population models that include correctly the brightest AGB stellar phase, dominant in young stellar populations. To classify W3, we employ the fundamental plane of stellar systems (Bender, Burstein & Faber 1992), for the first time in these kinds of studies. We find that W3 lies far from typical Milky Way globular clusters, but it is also far from the heavyweights ωCen in the Milky Way and G1 in M31, because it is too extended for its mass, and from dwarf elliptical galaxies because it is much more compact for its mass. Instead W3 lies close to the ultra-compact Fornax objects (Drinkwater et al. 2003) and to the compact elliptical M32, possibly shedding light on the still mysterious nature of these objects. A previously deserted region of the fundamental plane starts to be populated.

A brief review on globular cluster sub-populations in galaxies, and their constraints on galaxy formation and evolution is given. The metal-poor and metal-rich sub-populations are put in a historical context, and their properties, as known to date, are summarized. We review why the study of these sub-populations is extremely useful for the study of galaxy formation and evolution, but highlight a few caveats with the current interpretations. We re-visit the current globular cluster system formation scenarios and show how they boil down to a single scenario for the metal-poor clusters (namely the formation in “universal”, small fragments at high z) and that a hierarchical formation seems favored for the metal-rich clusters.

Extragalactic Globular Clusters are useful tracers of galaxy formation and evolution. Photometric studies of globular cluster systems beyond the Local Group are still the most popular method to investigate their physical properties, such as their ages and metallicities. However, the limitations of optical photometry are well known. The better wavelength sampling of the underlying cluster's SED using K-band photometry combined with optical passbands allows us to create colors which reduce the age-metallicity degeneracy to the largest extent. Here we report on the very first results of our near-IR photometric survey of globular cluster systems in early-type galaxies outside the Local Group.
