A key objective for upcoming surveys, and when re-analysing archival data, is the identification of variable stellar sources. However, the selection of these sources is often complicated by the unavailability of light curve data. Utilising a self-organising map (SOM), we demonstrate the selection of diverse variable source types from a catalogue of variable and non-variable SDSS Stripe 82 sources whilst employing only the median $u-g$, $g-r$, $r-i$, and $i-z$ photometric colours for each source as input, without using source magnitudes. This includes the separation of main sequence variable stars that are otherwise degenerate with non-variable sources ($u-g$,$g-r$) and ($r-i$,$i-z$) colour-spaces. We separate variable sources on the main sequence from all other variable and non-variable sources with a purity of $80.0\%$ and completeness of $25.1\%$, figures which can be modified depending on the application. We also explore the varying ability of the same method to simultaneously select other types of variable sources from the heterogeneous sample, including variable quasars and RR-Lyrae stars. The demonstrated ability of this method to select variable main sequence stars in colour-space holds promise for application in future survey reduction pipelines and for the analysis of archival data, where light curves may not be available or may be prohibitively expensive to obtain.

Euclid is a Europe-led cosmology space mission dedicated to a visible and near infrared survey of the entire extra-galactic sky. Its purpose is to deepen our knowledge of the dark content of our Universe. After an overview of the Euclid mission and science, this contribution describes how the community is getting organized to face the data analysis challenges, both in software development and in operational data processing matters. It ends with a more specific account of some of the main contributions of the Swiss Science Data Center (SDC-CH).

Clustering analysis indicate that at z ~ 2 submm-selected galaxies (SMGs) reside in very massive halos (MDM > 5 × 1013), suggesting that SMGs trace high-density environments that evolve into rich galaxy clusters. Conversely, recent work suggests that SMGs are tracers of a broader range of environments, including structures with more modest masses caught in highly active periods; since galaxies in these structures are likely caught during episodes of peak starbursts, SMGs may be tracers of a wider range of environments beyond the progenitors of todays very rich clusters, opening a window for a more complete exploration of the details underpinning the process of galaxy evolution in concert with the assembly of the large scale structure (LSS). We have undertaken a large observing program comprising deep narrow-band Ly-alpha imaging and multi-object spectroscopy using Palomar/Keck/Magellan/Gemini telescopes to probe for galaxy overdensities in SMG environments at z ~ 1 − 5. With ~200 spectroscopically-confirmed Ly-alpha emitters, we are in a position to gauge the level of galaxy overdensity in these regions.

We have obtained deep g, r, and i-band Subaru and ultra-deep 3.6 μm IRAC images of parts of the multiply-wrapped stellar stream around the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 5907. We have fitted the surface brightness measurements of the stream with FSPS stellar population synthesis models to derive the metallicity and age of the brightest parts of the stream. The resulting relatively high metallicity ([Fe/H] = −0.3) is consistent with a major merger scenario but a satellite accretion event cannot be ruled out.

Cold molecular and atomic gas plays a central role in our understanding of early galaxy formation and evolution. It represents the component of the interstellar medium (ISM) that stars form out of, and its mass, distribution, excitation, and dynamics provide crucial insight into the physical processes that support the ongoing star formation and stellar mass buildup. We here present results that demonstrate the capability of the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA) to detect the cold ISM and dust in “normal” galaxies at redshifts z=5–6. We also show detailed studies of the ISM in massive, dust-obscured starburst galaxies out to z>6 with ALMA, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI), and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). These observations place some of the most direct constraints on the dust-obscured fraction of the star formation history of the universe at z>5 to date, showing that “typical” galaxies at these epochs have low dust content, but also that highly-enriched, dusty starbursts already exist within the first billion years after the Big Bang.

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) is an HST/ACS imaging survey of 2 square degrees centered on RA = 10:00:28.6, Dec = + 02:12:21 (J2000). While the primary goal of the survey is to study evolution of galaxy morphology and large scale structure, an extensive multi-wavelength data set allows for a sensitive survey of AGN. Spectroscopy of optical counterparts to faint X-ray and radio sources is being carried out with the Magallen (Baade) Telescope and the ESO VLT. By achieving ∼80 redshift completeness down to I AB = 3, the eventual yield of AGN will be ∼1100 over the whole field.

Early results on supermassive black holes are described. The goals of the survey include a bolometric census of AGN down to moderate luminosities, the cosmic evolution and fueling history of the central engines, and a study of AGN environments on scales ranging from the host galaxy to clusters and superclusters.

The recent development of large, complete samples which identify high-redshift galaxies at $z\sim5.7$ and $z\sim 6.5$ from deep, wide-field surveys provides detailed information on the earliest galaxies, their numbers, spatial and kinematic distributions, and implications for early reionisation of the IGM. In this contribution we present results of spectroscopic studies of $z\sim 5.7$ and $z\sim6.5$ galaxies identified from our deep, Lyman alpha narrow-band and multicolour surveys conducted with the SuprimeCam mosaic CCD camera on the 8.3-m Subaru telescope and observed with the DEIMOS multi-object spectrograph on Keck. The luminosity function of the $z\sim6.5$ galaxies is shown to be similar to the luminosity function of the $z\sim 5.7$ galaxy samples, suggesting that a substantial star-forming population is already in place at $z\sim 6.5$. Comparisons of both individual and stacked spectra of galaxies in these two samples show that the Lyman alpha emission profiles, equivalent widths, and continuum break strengths do not substantially change over this redshift interval. The wide-field nature of the surveys also permits mapping of the large-scale distribution of high-redshift galaxies in spatial structures extending across individual SuprimeCam fields ($\sim 60$ Mpc). Field-to-field variations in the number of objects at $z\sim 6.5$ may shortly be able to place constraints on the porosity of the reionisation boundary.
