Cambridge English Language Teaching

The Objective Placement Test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions divided into three sections:

Section I: Language Use (40 items)
Section II: Reading (10 items)
Section III: Listening (10 items)

The tests reflect the content, language, and skills taught in Connect and the questions are drawn almost equally from the four levels. There are two versions of the Objective Placement Tests – Test A and Test B. Each version of the test requires 50 minutes to administer.

How to Give an Objective Test
Prepare for the test

  1. Select the version of the test you will give (Test A or Test B) and make copies of the test and Student Answer Sheet – one of each for every student.
  2. Select the correct Audio Recording for the version of the test you are giving. (The audio scripts are included at the end of each test.)

Begin the test

  1. Tell students that the test will help you determine the level of Connect at which they should begin studying. Point out to students that they should not guess answers arbitrarily. If they are uncertain of an answer but can make an educated guess, they should fill in an answer. However, if they have no idea, they should leave the answer blank.
  2. Ask students to remove all books and materials from their desks except for a pencil and scratch paper. Tell them that they will not be able to refer to dictionaries or other materials during the testing period.
  3. Distribute the tests and answer sheets. Ask students not to look at the tests until you tell them to begin.
  4. Tell students to write their names and the date on the answer sheet.

Give the test

  1. Direct students’ attention to the General Directions of the test.
  2. Read the directions aloud as students read along. Answer any questions students may have. If necessary, these instructions can also be given in the students’ first language.
  3. When students are ready, tell them to turn to the first page of Section I: Language Use. Say: “Read the directions for the Language Use section and begin the test. You have 20 minutes to complete this section.”
  4. After 20 minutes, tell students that it is time to begin Section II: Reading. Say: “Read the directions for the Reading section and continue the test. You have 15 minutes to complete this section. Do not look back at Section I.”
  5. After 15 minutes, tell students that it is time to begin Section III: Listening. Say, “Read the directions for the Listening section. You have 15 minutes to complete this section. Do not look back at Sections I or II.”
  6. Play the audio program. Continue the audio program without stopping until all conversations have been played. (Pauses are provided on the audio program to give students time to read the items before they listen and to answer the items after they listen.) Once all the conversations have been played, allow students to review their answers for the remaining time.
When the allotted time is up, announce the end of the test and collect all materials.
