Abstract
Al+3 ion diffusion is found to be the rate–controlling step during parabolic growth of single–crystals of spinel in Al2O3–MgO–CaO–SiO2 slag at low temperatures, but the growth becomes linear as the transformation temperature is raised, possibly due to the onset of natural convection which contributes a further flux of matter to the growing spinel.
