About the Authors
  • Since this Companion to the New Testament was first published in 1970, new methods of interpretation and sustained research into the environment of Jesus, and the early church, have combined to correct former misunderstandings and to set old problems in a new light. This fully revised second edition now follows the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) to provide a running commentary on the text of the New Testament while taking account of the findings of recent scholarship. Using no technical language, it aims to set the text in the context of the time and place in which it was written, and to clarify its meaning in the light of modern methods of research and interpretation. Accessible and up-to-date, this work will be invaluable to clergy, students and all who have a serious interest in the New Testament.

    • A full revision of the Companion first published in 1970, incorporating advances in New Testament scholarship
    • Now based on The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible
    • Uses no technical language, ensuring text remains accessible for general readers

'A remarkable achievement.' C.F.D. Moule, Journal of Theological Studies

    'Very readable.' Bible Study Monthly

'Accessible and up-to-date, this work will be invaluable to clergy, students and all who have a serious interest in the New Testament, including pastors preparing sermons. Indeed, anyone tackling the New Testament could do a lot worse than to refer to this learned, reliable, plainspoken and honest Companion, which has been so widely acclaimed for its scholarship, insight and sense of historical style.' The Universe

'… wise and lucid commentary. Enormous amounts of information - and the fruits of a lifetime's engagement with other scholars - are distilled into page after page of the elegant prose for which Dr Harvey is known. The book is a pleasure to read. It will be highly valued both by preachers and by general readers seeking a one-volume commentary.' Church Times

'Anthony Harvey's style is clear and logical. … The Companion is a distinguished work which succeeds admirably in providing its intended reader with a lucid and scholarly commentary on the New Testament. In an era of hyper-specialization, its range and authoritative tone, sustained over such a breadth of material, are highly creditable.' The Times Literary Supplement

'Readers will appreciate Dr Harvey's placing of the Biblical narrative in its historical and geographical context … invaluable text both for its intended general readership and for theological students … it is an authoritative text … important adjunct to collections of Bibles and Biblical dictionaries in reference libraries.'
