As a best-selling psychiatry author, I have a broad experience in publishing and have worked with several publishers. But I keep coming back to Cambridge. Why?
My association with Cambridge University Press began more than 20 years ago, when I first published my textbook Essential Psychopharmacology in 1996. Since then, Cambridge University Press has edited and produced for me dozens of books, including four editions of the textbook and six of the Prescriber’s Guide. I am proud to say that the Stahl brand now boasts numerous best sellers and many award winning books, totalling altogether over 1 million sales.
I like the fact that Cambridge University Press is large enough to be an international player (I travel extensively to New York where Cambridge has a major presence in the all-important North American market), yet small enough to give lots of individual attention to authors.
Cambridge has the right balance of business and academics – they are very aware of the need to market products to be successful. They have an admirable culture of timeless scholarship combined with some younger, visionary individuals moving the press into the modern publishing world.
Also, Cambridge has always had blockbuster editors overseeing the process. It is not just the press that is so important, it is the individuals.
It is always good to have a hungry publisher and not a complacent one – they know how to publish, how to market, how to cultivate and how to grow.
