Summary

Hosea, applied by Air Marshal (‘Bomber’) Harris to Hitler’s bombardment of London
In this chapter and the next we approach the contemporary scene. However, before introducing new intellectual projects bearing on our current cultural confusion, we must take a further look at the wider Western landscape after 1918. For, after the ‘war to end all wars’, political changes – particularly in America, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia and China – have shaped the world in which Western thinkers now live, providing the backdrop for their social and philosophical theorising.
