Book description

The book looks at study skills and other central concerns of EAP, such as needs analysis, syllabus and course design, methodology and materials, learning styles, tests and exams, and academic style and genre analysis. In addition to general EAP, the book also considers subject-specific language and the production of teaching materials. Throughout, it takes a user-friendly approach in which theoretical considerations are balanced with practical experience. Issues are discussed and illustrated, but readers are also encouraged to form their own opinions by means of stimulating introspect and discuss sections at the end of each chapter.

Reviews

'This book is accessible, comprehensive and extremely useful. It deserves to find the broadest possible market, because it addresses issues which are of great relevance to all branches of EFL - indeed, to all aspects of language teaching in general.' English Language Gazette

'I teach English at the Faculty of Economics, Belgrade. I have recently obtained your amazingly comprehensive and valuable book "English for Academic Purposes". I have learnt a lot from it.' Nadezda Silaski, Senior Lecturer in English

'Jordan has done the impossible: he has managed to give us a 'comprehensive overview of the whole subject' in just over four hundred pages. … Jordan's English for Academic Purposes is a most welcome and much needed guide/resource book for EAP teachers in Britain and abroad.' Modern English Teacher

'Jordan presents a complete guided tour of EAP as it exists today. As a guide to references in the field, his book is a beacon. He indicates directions for further research, gives samples of published/printed materials, and provides a list of recommended books and journals. I recommend this book to all those interested in the EAP field.'English Australia Journal
