Florida.

SYN. as given on p. 13 with the addition of Cychrus elevatus Fab., Syst. Eleuth. 1, pp. 166, 167, No. 5 (1801).

Scaphinotus heros Harris

As pointed out by Professor E. C. van Dyke, and according to his recent revision of the Genus Scaphinotus, the figure (Plate 6) would appear to be that of van heros Harris whereas the description agrees with the true unicolor Fab. Re-examination of the type shows that in ordinary daylight there is no trace of violet; but in strong light a faint suffusion of violet is perceptible and this, unfortunately, was intensified in the process of producing the plate.

The coloration, not being decidedly violaceous, is that of unicolor Fab. The margin or bead of the pronotum is thicker than the outer antennal segments; its thickest part (behind the middle) is as thick as the first or basal segment of the antenna. In that respect the type agrees with heros Harris. The elytral raised lines (flattened costae), those from the suture to near the outer border, are distinctly wider than the striate-punctate interstices, which is a feature indicative of unicolor Fab. The Hunterian insect would appear to be the type of Scaphinotus unicolor (Fab.). Accordingly the name and references should read as follows:

Scaphinotus unicolor (Fab.)

Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 92 (E. Csiki, 1927), Carabinae, 11, pp. 318, 319. Catalogue of the Coleoptera of America, North of Mexico (Charles W. Leng, 1920), p. 43.

U.S.A. (Alabama, Southern States).

SYN. Carabus unicolor Fab., Mant. Ins. 1, p. 198, No. 38 (1787); Oliv. Ent. in, 35, p. 47, pi. 6, fig. 62 (i795). var. heros Harris, Boston Journ. Nat. Hist. 11, 1839, p. 196. var. shoemakeri Leng.
