Summary

1. The edition of L. d'Achéry and J. Mabillon. Acta sanctorum ordinis sancti Benedicti (Paris, 1672, Saec. III, Pt. 1, pp. 263–84; Venice, 1734, Saec. III, Pt. 1, pp. 257–75). See above, p. 45.

2. The Bollandist edition. Acta Sanctorum (Aprilis, 11, 1675), pp. 38–50. The editor mentions in his introduction a MS. from St Omer (presumably B, see above, p. 36) and also a MS. from Douai which is certainly D. He refers to the Arras MS. also in his notes. He speaks strangely enough of the Vita as having been ‘hactenus inedita praelo’ (p. 37, E), but nevertheless at the beginning of the text he declares that the Life is ‘ex pervetusto MS. Bertiniano [i.e. B] collato cum editione Acheriana'. But he follows the text of Mabillon very closely, even to the extent of copying the mistaken dedication of the prologue to Æthelbald. He does not, however, insert the words sancti Beda, as Mabillon does, in the prologue and he omits the puzzling reference to the feast of St Bartholomew in April or May (see p. 181). Where he differs from the text of Mabillon, it is mostly to correct the latter's misprints or to give a reading which appears in none of the MSS. now available and would appear to be his own attempts at emendation. He also follows Mabillon in adding the extract from Ordericus as the final chapter of the Life.
