Summary

The final budget of the Ancien Régime, that for 1788, was partially reconstructed in 1936 by F. Braesch, on the basis of the Compte rendu au roi and other documents left by Necker. I have presented the main results of his investigation below. They make it only too easy to understand ‘the profound causes of the ill the Estates-General was called upon to remedy’.
