Summary

Key Learning Points

  1. 1. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the preferred term for the conditions in patients with airflow obstruction who were previously diagnosed as having chronic bronchitis or emphysema.

  2. 2. A diagnosis of COPD should be considered in patients over the age of 35 who have a risk factor (generally smoking) and who present with exertional breathlessness, chronic cough, regular sputum production, frequent winter ‘bronchitis’ or wheeze.

  3. 3. There is no single diagnostic test for COPD.

  4. 4. Co-morbidities are common in COPD and should be actively identified.

  5. 5. Clinicians should be aware that they are likely to underestimate survival in an acute exacerbation of COPD treated by invasive mechanical ventilation.
