Summary

Eminent are his works and respectably original views, though many readers may not wholly agree with all his interpretations at places. Religion, let us grant, is a subject in which different people even of the same school of thought may think differently according to their lights. But here in Professor Montgomery Watt's works, a balance is the built-in quality.

Reasonably assiduous effort to further the understanding of another people's religion demands a generous heart and an open mind, and in this respect Professor Montgomery Watt has demonstrated his scholarly magnanimity amply.

Yet the dedication of this volume to him is not enough tribute. As a scholar and a friend, I have always admired the qualities of his head and heart. I hold him in very high esteem.
