Summary

This chapter looks at the Palestinian political leadership in Israel and analyzes the patterns and forms that have appeared in the decades since 1948. The Nakba left Palestinian towns and villages in ruins; the leadership, both political and religious, was also in ruins. The power vacuum left the Palestinians in Israel weak and leaderless. Most of those who remained in the new state of Israel were farmers and peasants, severed from its intellectual and political leadership and deprived of the traditional urban elite. In addition, the isolation of Arab towns imposed by the military government weakened material and social ties between different communities. A new brand of leadership emerged to replace the traditional political leadership. In this chapter we will analyze the new patterns of political and social leadership that emerged in Palestinian society in Israel, both local and national.
